For print layout, Quark is the best tool made. It's fast, easy and well accepted in the industry if you ever want to get print done directly from your source files. But since this is the Web Design and Content section, I must assume you are talking about which one is better for Web layouts, in which case the answer is neither :) manman 07-07-2004, 09:05 PM Mainly for general layout with text flow from page to page? J the_pm 07-07-2004, 09:20 PM I'm not sure what text flow from page to page is (text that overlaps the page edge doesn't sound very practical to me!), but for general layouts, nothing beats Quark, ever. If you can handle the price, that is :) Marble 07-08-2004, 12:20 AM InDesign. If you know InDesign and Photoshop inside and out you will get a job in the print industry. Quark is widely used, but that has changed since InDesign came out. But if you are talking about web use any graphics editor your are good with, I prefer Photoshop and build your pages using a color-coding editor or vi if you are hardcore. Christina 07-08-2004, 03:06 AM I've never had the honor of hating In-Design...but have touched a bit on Quark. These applications are not for Web. For text flow as you call it..or maybe continuity...you don't need Quark just to lay things out. Photoshop will do just fine with the various guides and such. If you are going to Print, then use Quark, I guess. :) logotutorial 07-08-2004, 04:09 AM Quark use to THE layout program, but they got lazy latly and Adobe is beating *** with InDesign. the_pm 07-08-2004, 07:06 AM This is an interesting turn of events I'm reading about here. Like logotutorial and I have stated, Quark has always been *the* layout program, but I wasn't aware Quark's development efforts have fallen flat. As recently as a couple of years ago, it was still the industry standard software for newspaper and magazine design, but this trend toward InDesign has me intrigued. What is it about Adobe's software that gives it such an edge over the venerable Quark all of a sudden? I'd be very interested in knowing this, as I'll be putting in a software upgrade/purchase request soon (I have an unlimited software budget :D ), and I want to make sure I'm keeping up with the game! Paul H hdezela 07-08-2004, 09:32 AM I could go into a long diatribe about this, but http://www.creativepro.com/story/feature/20604.html does it better. logotutorial 07-08-2004, 10:01 AM Quark took FOREVER to get a version for OSX out, where as InDesign was almost ready to go as soon at OSX was introduced. Quark finally got a new verions out, but it's still very buggy and they don't seem to be that motivated to fix the problems. Marble 07-08-2004, 11:07 AM I am merely commenting based on what knowledge I have, and that is InDesign is the software to know in the print industry. Straight out of the mouth of someone I know who manages one of the biggest print houses in Canada. |
