View Full Version : about to go for 123-reg
butterflies 07-07-2004, 11:15 AM hi all,
i'm a complete newbie to all this and am about to embark on this website thing (how tech advanced does that sound!). anyway, from what the forums have been saying about 123-reg, i going to register my domain name with them. at £2.59 sounds great, though is that too good to be true? Just want to take the name and continue my search for a host with less stress (here's hoping anyway). am i doing the right thing??
any advice is v. much appreciated.
thanks

butterflies 07-07-2004, 11:44 AM just wondering, why is there such big difference between registras? with 123-reg, its £2.59 and with enom, its £14.99 but with stuff like map and phone texting etc, is that something i need as i'm a new small business.
please help
Lubeca 07-07-2004, 12:24 PM The .uk registry charges GBP 5.00 plus VAT for two years - that's a total of GBP 5.88.
Companies within the EU can claim back the VAT (so they pay 5.00), companies outside the EU can't (so they pay 5.88)
So - the actual cost to the registrar is GBP 2.50 or GBP 2.94 per year.
123-reg seems to have adopted a policy of marketing its "registration only" service as a loss leader. Clearly, a mark-up of 9p is not going to make them any money, especially if they include free mail forwarding. Clearly their profit comes from selling add-on services which they hope their customers will want to buy.
Enom, on the other hand, seems to have adopted a different business model and is trying to make a profit from selling registrations.
I would say that both business models are entirely valid... it's up to the customer to choose!

I use 123-reg for all of my domains.
They are one of the cheapest for .uk domains.
They aren't for .com/.net etc however I like to have all of my domains in the one place and under the one control panel.
I've never had a single problem with them.
They are fast, professional and if you need support just drop them an e-mail and on the couple of occasions I've done so they have answered fast and effeciently.
This is certainly not one of those "too good to be true" companies - as said above, they are making profits elsewhere, the 9p profit they make on .uk domains is really nothing to them.
Bashar 07-07-2004, 04:11 PM i used 123-reg.co.uk for some domains and they were pretty good.
although i never contacted support.
so ill second that they aren't 'too good to be true' :)
RMPnet 07-07-2004, 05:39 PM Yes, 123-reg are fine I have most of my .uk domains with them.
Their cp allows you to use either their nameservers and set your own A,MX etc records or you can change to use your own/hosts name servers.
You can forward emails and web request's to other domains, and more.
I've used their helpdesk a couple of times, fortunately not for anything major, responses have usually arrived within 12-24hours.
The only downside to them that I can think of is that they charge to transfer in .uk domains, a couple of years ago this was free.
Regards
Keith.
Bladerunner 07-07-2004, 06:05 PM Indeed, forgot about their fee for transferring in .uk domains although watch for special offers - I managed to get a few co.uk domains I had with other companies in because they were offering a "free .uk transfers in for a month".
They do occasionally run specials.
Oh and it is worth nting that they do NOT charge to transfer out at all.
barrywien 07-08-2004, 07:16 AM I use 123reg for all my *uk domains, and namecheap.com for all others. 123reg are quite good, telephone support is great during business hours if you need to contact them, plus they have just been bought over by Pipex Internet Services so they have a good future ahead of them.
Ive got around 85 *uk domains with them and have had my account for 2 years now without problem, apart from forgetting my password which was sorted within mintes over the phone.
Postmaster 07-08-2004, 08:51 AM I have all but 1 domain with 123reg.co.uk exelent service
