Does anyone ever find slices in photoshop to be more combersome then anything when it comes to dealing with file saving and organizing. Its always sounded like a good feature, but I still do things the old school way of selecting by guides.

Well, doesn't selecting by guides comes to the same concept as slices, except you have to crop each one by yourself and save it?

I use slices, but I never use the coded page PS exports.

I select by guides because I select very specific pieces of visual information and code it very differently from the way Photoshop codes. I haven't allowed Photoshop or Fireworks to slice and code for me for a long time now.

What is your steps to do it? I slice the psd then export to html and images then open the html in golive cs. Whats the best way you recomend? I just need an easier way to do text over images with layers in golive. But when I do a
<? include("header.php") ?> or
<? include("footer.php") ?>
the text is all out of line. I have only been into design for about 6 months and still learning. Searched all over for this type of how to but only brings up mostly PS how to's for other things I allready know how to do. I have been messing with tables allot lately though and starting to get a hang of that.

Slice what you want to use. ImageReady and PS add all the spacer images, etc. that you don't need. Just take the images and know how you want it to look as a webpage, then think for a minute how you are going to lay it out... So what I am saying is discard the exported HTML. it's crapola.

If you are going to be using includes for web content, lay it out as a static HTML page, then break it into pieces.

Use <?php instead of short tags. It's the proper way to do it.

Regarding slicing: Slice your page up, if you have to you can slice some images into seperate pieces and put them back to gether with html. Once you get your slices all ready, when you save for web, you can click on each slice and set how you want to save it. .gif, .jpg, .png... Cropping each image is a waste of time. Note: .gif is only 256 colors so it's best with text, or images that have very defined lines. .jpg is for photos, etc. or anything that a .gif will not work well with. .png (24) is superior to both, but the file sizes can get bigger. One thing with .png's is some browsers do not support the alpha transparency, but that is only an issue if you want transparent images, or semi-transparent.

i tend to look at the overall and try to cut down the bytes by choosing a group of colours that will minimise the filesize. it is alot of work, but totally worth it IMO. :D

Wow... sXlaNeave's account didn't last long! BTW, Marble, thanks for that excellent and informative post. I just upgraded from PS4 to CS... this slicing is all very new to me!

I never slice unless 100% mandatory. I create each PSD individually
