Hello,

For game server ( say..counter strike), does anyone know the average bandwidth usage?

On a server running 3 game servers (Counter Strike) - you're probably looking at something like this :

Max In: 80 kB/s Average In: 50 kB/s
Max Out: 210.0 kB/s Average Out: 100 kB/s

Just a sample of daily/5 min logs.

I'd say around 100 gigs a month excluding custom maps, for a 20man server

We have a couple that range from 7 kbps to 1 Mbps.

From experience of clients using servers for gaming [CS in particular]:

5-6 Kbs per player [Outgoing from server].

Stats for Incoming are higher but I foget tehm now. You are realistically looking at a min of 10GB/month though [you want to get a 100Mbs busrtable connection if possible too].

Im also interested in this...

what i have figured out is thisL

lets say a CS or UT server with 10 players using 7kbps each...
that would be..

25,200kbph per player

604,800KBpd per player

18,144,000KBpm per player

or 177GB (assuming a gigabyte (GB) is 1,073,741,824 bytes, or 1024 megabytes) per 10 players per month..

is this right?

but theres a huge hole in this... that is... an "average" of 10 players being online 24/7 could need much more Bandwidth than 70KBps, as this is an average, 100 users could be on at a time needing more than 700KBps...

could someone running the servers post some real life info about the kind of server, the bandwidth used and the average of players the server has?

TIA.

I would have to agree with TrouT. We run what I feel are 2 pretty popular CS servers (20 player). On average we start having users login about 3PM and about 5PM we're about 80-100% full till about 2-3 AM.
With that in mind, we burn about 60 Gigs of transfer a month per game server.

Barry

P.S. On the weekends, we're full 24 hours (70% and up)

Is anyone interested in Gaming Server hosting in the US?
It's something we have had a few requests for before.

Apocalypse,

You forgot to divide by 8 to get from bits to byte. So it would actually be around 22 GB/month for 10 players @ 24/7 and 7kbs.

I have a game server business. 70GB (average per month) for a 20 player public server is what you are looking at.

I can give you some MRTG graphs of some of our physical gameserver. Most are running between 3 and 6 games.

Our business site is http://www.pwnz.net

Wolfenstein uses almost double that. We are still trying to tweak it down some. Apparently there is a patch coming out before the end of the year that we hope addresses some of these issues.

We run mostly TFC servers with probably 10 CS, FA and DoD

Here is one of our MRTG monthly reports. This is one of our bigger servers, has 5 gameservers on it I think:

Max In: 1424.4 kb/s (1.4%)
Max Out: 1469.2 kb/s (1.5%)

Average In: 549.6 kb/s (0.5%)
Average Out: 357.3 kb/s (0.4%)

Current In: 374.5 kb/s (0.4%)
Current Out: 264.0 kb/s (0.3%)

What do you think about a CS network at http://www.clanmammal.com/html/serverrating.html?
Are they a famous network?

From the look, they are Italian based network.

I've never heard of them...but thats not saying much. :) Go to our contact page here:

http://www.pwnz.net/contact.html

Contact Mr. Bungle or Baron. They can help you with whatever you need. If you are looking for an overseas gameserver rental place ask them they can give you a referral.

I got lots of questions and figured instead of starting new thread ill ask here as you all are discussing game servers. you have answered some of my questions all ready but ill ask them again so i do not get confsed,,,,,,,,or lost on my list.
I am researching starting a game server hosting/clan web hosting business and got lots of newbbie questions so here we go.

1. I hear alot about rackshack.com and they seem reasonable, if i was to use there servers to host my counter-strike games and web space, is that a speacal request or do they do game servers. If not who do i go to or is there better providers out there.

2. I will be selling up to a 32 man server with i hope 6 games per server what would my monthly bandwidth be calculated at.

3. I want to run linux servers, I didnt notice if rachshack offers linux and if not where can i go.

4. Not to undermind you guys as im absolutly sure you know what your talking about but i was talking to a guy the other day and he said he was running a CS server and he ate 400GB a month, im not sure how many game he had on it though.

5. Do i need a license to sell game hosting?

6. I want player stats, roger wilco, admin mod, and anticheat scrips put on server, do they do that and if so will it cost me a fortune, if not how do i get them on there? Or can i do that through a telnet program or somthing.

Well im sure i got mor but ill let you guys ponder on these for a bit, any help would be great.

thanks
Douglas

I have a couple of friends running servers in rackshack, they seem very good. and the 300GB actual bandwidth helps a lot.

2. I will be selling up to a 32 man server with i hope 6 games per server what would my monthly bandwidth be calculated at.

Check what we posted before, if a 10 men server is running 24/7 uses about... 30GB of bandwidth, that would be about 100GB per month for a 32 users game server.

3. I want to run linux servers, I didnt notice if rachshack offers linux and if not where can i go.

They do offer linux servers, check their webpage http://www.rackshack.net for pricing.

4. Not to undermind you guys as im absolutly sure you know what your talking about but i was talking to a guy the other day and he said he was running a CS server and he ate 400GB a month, im not sure how many game he had on it though.

That could happen... you should research all the options and base your quantity of player on the max possible bandwidth you would like the server to use in a month (if you set the server to hold 32 users, do your math thinking theres always 32 players every day of the month, just to be safe, but this is unlikely to happen..)

5. Do i need a license to sell game hosting?

Im not 100% sure, but i dont think so, you just sell the hosting and if your users install the mods servers is cuz you assume they have permission to do so, or if you set up script to install some mods in the new accounts you create just make sure you check the agreements in each mod you wish to install for your clients.

6. I want player stats, roger wilco, admin mod, and anticheat scrips put on server, do they do that and if so will it cost me a fortune, if not how do i get them on there? Or can i do that through a telnet program or somthing.

You can use your SSH or telnet in and install anything you want, if you want support for installing stuff you could ask rackshack (assuming you sign up with them) but i think this kind of support will cost you, but if you get to know linux a bit this is really easy... lurk thru this forums and http://www.linuxdoc.com and just make sure you know what your doing, practice a lil bit first set up a nice firewall... game servers get DOS attacked frequently...

Hope this helps, if i messed up in some of my answers someone please post the correct ones ;)

Cheers,

Apoc

Well i appreciate the reply it has helped alot, I am going to go with rackshack unless somthing better pops up within the next few weeks, so far noone can beat rackshack and like you said, i to allso like the 300gb acual bandwidth instead of trying to figure out what im acually getting.

I do have one more question though, ive heard alot about those remote desktop programs where i can acuall have the server desktop on my local system to install and download things, would that be a option with rackshack or should i ask them, that would be so much easy i would think.

How server/loadintensive is a gameserver. Is a RAQ3 suitable for a gameserver.
I absolutely don't have a clue what a gameserver means, does it only reroute traffic, or is it also calculating stuff.

I have a RAQ3 server with 4webspace, but the load is already pretty high due to a buzy VBB site. But i have a lot of traffic left so running a small gameserver would be cool.

Please advise.

I use Remote Administrator (Radmin), theres also lot of other programs like this, including a freeware that works GREAT with linux computers called VNC

but.. for linux administration, you shouldnt install X, use console... just telnet or SSH into it
