View Full Version : Names in hosting
One Web 12-18-2001, 02:30 AM I have seen people talk about good hosting designs and bad hosting designs. People also talk about good prices and bad prices. But what about names? Which hosting company do you think has a good name? A bad one? A funny one?
There are names that make us say "WOW, I wish I had come up with that name" There are others that make us say "What was that person thinking?" And others that make us say “That is the funniest name I have ever heard"
So what names do you like? Which one don't you like? And which one makes you laugh?
I think that Echolima is a weird but catchy name. I like it a lot.
Jedito 12-18-2001, 02:38 AM Best domain? Wow, I would love to have http://localhost.com :) or just hosting.com

Lord no...
If you had "localhost.com" you'd be getting the equivalent of a low grade DOS all the time because of all the badly configured scripts that people setup with all their defaults still set wrong... :)
mantra 12-18-2001, 06:41 PM I wish I came up with the name linuxhost or even webhost.com
simple names and easy to remember.
pcsteve 12-18-2001, 06:45 PM Here's a werid one. I am sure most of you have read about it on WHT before.
wtfhosting.com
LOL...and yes it stands for WTF...really just read their website
"faqs". ;)
Walter 12-19-2001, 11:08 AM By far the best I've seen is affordablehost!
Perfecthost 12-19-2001, 12:41 PM The problem with our name is no matter how good we are, we can never live up to the name.

The default setup is localhost :) not localhost.com
Anyway.. a domain that the owner must hate is test.com :)
I use it with all the forms that I test

The worst domain for junk mail replies is somewhere.com, closely followed by nowhere.com.
If you want a fake domain, use example.com. It is IANA-reserved for specifically this purpose.
jeremiah23 12-19-2001, 01:28 PM What do you think of this name Reasonablehost.com
bobcares 12-19-2001, 02:53 PM "What's in a name... what you call a rose would smell as good by any other name..... "
What I usually feel is that you create a name and make a site that goes along with it.
For example. a name like affordablehost.com and a very hi-fi site would seem wierd. It has to be simple... for the common man where he can relate easy. One has to be understanding with such a name and I guess Tina is doing a good job there... :)
On the other hand consider hostrocket, technohost - These have to be real high fi,with the very latest in everything the aim is to get the tech saavy guys.. A simple look would be a contradition here.... (Think of a guy named HE-MAN and looks like Michael J Fox..... :) )
So the crux of it is have a name that suites your site's looks and your brand image...
This just my thoughts...
Have a great day :)

amar

Lamar, heh... quite true. You'll always get the, "Ohhhh, so you're not so PERFECT are you?" comments on forums and in emails from disgruntled customers. Must be lovely.
Is almostperfecthost.com available? :D
priyadi 12-24-2001, 09:29 AM The problem with names is almost all the good ones are taken, except if you are really really creative. Last year I need to come up with a good name for a new host. Well, the first thing I do is to list all the good ideas from meetings, from friends, and my own ideas, and do a whois lookup on them (on .com .org .net). The result? Almost all are already taken. If not already taken, they are already taken on other TLD. Getting a good name nowadays is almost as hard as getting a good user name on various free email providers. :)
Eryxma 12-24-2001, 10:59 AM I just thought of a name, but I am not going to mention it until I register it first....
Heh, wait till you hear it... you will like it....

Ya but don't you see. Your name doesn't have to do anything with hosting. Look at our name - Echolima

Where do you get a cow from the name "Gateway"? Welllll.... I bought my first computer from Gateway probably in 1987 or '88 (by the way, I was very happy with that well-built machine, but I wouldn't buy one from them today). At the time the company had the futuristic name "Gateway 2000," but the image their branding was working towards wasn't futuristic at all. I found them through a full-page ad in Computer Shopper; a photo of cows in a field with the heading "Computers from Iowa?" The photo, it turns out, was taken on the Waites farm, where Ted was living when he started the company.
Shortly after I placed my order, the company moved to the Livestock Exchange Building in Sioux City, SD. There's an address any computer company would love to have!
So the spotted cow theme has been part of Gateway's branding since the beginning, even though the actual talking cow on the TV commercials now is new.
cool,
its kinda like that annoying kid on the dell commericals.

Jodi K. 02-06-2002, 12:43 PM We like our name quite a lot. It gives us a chance to be down-to-earth (what's more "down-to-earth" than a COW? :) ), enjoy ourselves while at the same time, presenting a great deal to clients. Best of both worlds, as far as we're concerned.
Who said you have to be boring to be a web hosting company?
;)
fat cow...hehehehe...fat cow...hehehehehe :stickout
