View Full Version : using email forwarding w/ 3rd-party DNS?
techdog 07-04-2004, 12:08 AM I was going to set up email forwarding for my domain that's registered with Registerfly, but I found out that you have to use Registerfly's default nameservers in order to do that. My site is hosted with another company, so I have to list the other company's DNS settings in my Registerfly account. Are there any registrars that let you have the site hosted somewhere else but still do email forwarding through the registrar? Or is that technically not possible?
dmaven 07-04-2004, 12:57 AM You can use RegisterFly's DNS and email forwarding but just point the website to your site(A record).

Bashar 07-04-2004, 02:03 AM registerfly uses enom's name-services.com nameservers which i never found them down for single moment they have 5 nameservers here and there, so its so stable and nice :)
but could be your host doing the same you never know.
btw why don't you use your host email forwarding ?

Overall Enom doesn't have much downtime. The last downtime we have heard of is for about 30 minutes a few months ago.
But that may just be for a few domains.... not really sure.
Do they have an SLA?

Uhh... Akamai went down and they have MUCH more than 5 name servers and they are using IP anycast.
So the answer to your question is yes, it may be hard but it is possible.

They do what? They have not had 100% uptime. I just called their reseller support and the person even claimed a 99.9% uptime in the past year. He said that they knew of a few minutes of problems in the past year.
I'm not saying that this is bad at all. This is actually excellent.
But, just stating the facts as they are.

Just called back and this person claimed a 100% uptime.
So maybe it depends who you talk to?:D
nameslave 07-05-2004, 08:58 AM EVERY server is subject to *some* downtime. When people "claim" 100% uptime, they may be referring to a shorter time frame like 3 months, 1 month or even a week. It's exceptional to have 0 minutes downtime on a yearly basis, not to say an even longer timespan.
Moreover, if your domain is already hosted, why not use your host's e-mail forwarding? If they charge you extra, go find another one that doesn't.

I do believe they have only been doing hosting for like 6 months, so they have had no downtime in that time period except for the usual reboots that are required with windows servers.
A better way to phrase it is that there are no downtimes due to server problems, security, etc.
Any downtime experienced is user error with programing, or DNS - or problems such as the AOL issue, which isnt really downtime.
