A recent headache for us has been the geography of data centers. Allow me to explain...

We use a number of hosts, and are always looking for more. The nightmare scenario is purchasing hosting, only to discover later that we already have hosting in the facility via a different host. That sort of destroys the whole idea of backup hosts/etc.

I've therefore been looking for a list of major data centers, with an idea of which major reseller-hosts have servers there. I've had no luck whatsoever.

Does anyone know of such a list?


If there isn't one, how about trying to compile at least some data? Here's a starter:

Not sure, but you might want to add us - we have a few hosts that hang out here w/servers @ our humble little datacenter.

Just a note for my 2 cents.
My host was with Global Compass and had repeated datacenter problems on an almost regular basis. They are now in Chicago (not sure which DC or I would post it) and have had 0 problems since moving.
That was a year or more ago so GC may have resolved their issues now.

Yes, this is meant to be a worldwide map... only UK and US have been suggested so far though. It would also be nice to get a few more example hosts as well.

The intention is to build quite a useful picture, for those like me, who need accounts in different geographical locations. There is simply nothing like that out there that I can find.

A wiki is a possibility (which I'll look at), but for immediate input from people who know what they are talking about, there is no beating WHT.

You can add Pwebtech's new Facility too. Heaps of hosts will have servers there.

Perhaps while compiling your list - you can publish it on one of your many servers you have at different datacenters ;) That way we dont have to scroll through the same list 10 times just to get to the next post?

Another thought

You need to make sure you truely have the top level provider or at least break out the list in the proper manner.

For example there are many Equinix locations throughout the world. Inside each equinix there are usually several large providers (Internap for example). And Internap provides co-location and bandwidth services to its clients. AS IF THAT WASNT ENOUGH....companies co-locating within Internap sometimes resell their services to shared hosting providers and the like.

So - your list should probably be broken out as follows:

DATACENTER/FACILITY
City, State
Direct resellers (buying space directly from facility)
->Sub reseller
-->2nd level reseller
--->3rd level reseller
etc....

I assure you you will find some shared providers who are a few steps down the chair.

Alternatively you may want to focus your list on only direct resellers/tenants of the primary datacenter or facility..

Buba69: There are more reasons for keeping it here than moving it to one of our servers, not least that the search facility doesn't extend beyong WHT. It's also a community resource of WHT, not one of mine.

There are also many ways of doing this. It will never be a complete list, but if it helps resellers ensure that they are hosting backup sites and competing clients in different locations (for obvious reasons), and if it helps others understand the different options, it will have done its job. At the very least, it includes many of the largest and most well known centers.

I've certainly learned a bit here, and hopefully others have too. It would be nice if we could populate with a few more hosts though, for a broader picture.

You should remove DedicatedNow/Pegasus from the list because of the pending move to their new facility, which is in Clifton, NJ.

Many people that use NAC use Pegasus so their servers will be moved when Pegasus move... rendering that list obsolete.

Basically common sense Matt.... just looking for the main concentration of servers (which most resellers tend to have), not every center you just happen to have a server at.

i know of at least a handful of companies that have 1 or 2 servers in several locations. If you are doing shared hosting, it is a strategy that many employ. Any time you start having problems you can readily migrate you data to another server at another datacenter.

I understand and realize the need for your project - but it is kind of unrealistic to ever build a close to complete picture. It would be better to just advise people to research their choices before choosing a host. Or just map the primary datacenters/telco hotels and their primary hosting providers. Any host that is worth getting service from will readily tell you where their servers are and who they are getting service from. You may just have to ask the right questions (ex. Do you buy directly from your datacenter or from one of their resellers?)

I think we've already built something quite useful to some folks (including me). If it's not useful for you.. great.. move on to another thread and don't return. Problem solved.

The importance of knowing where the data centers are, and which resellers use them, struck me even more accutely with the current DN/Pegasus saga. We actually have three hosts there (I thought it was two, until 3 sets of sites went down!).

Knowing in advance which sites/hosts are going to take a hit like that, without relying on the hosts emails, can be a big help.

Theres a UK data centre that has been missed off that list (I think)

ServerSure (serversure.com) is located in Sheffield, England
I think Serversure is the only company tht uses that datacentre.

Just a quick update on one of the resellers on the list

Bluewho.com is no longer in NAC. They are with Pegasus and therefore now in the new Fortress ITX facilities in Clifton NJ.

Also, they have recently started with servers in the Atjeu DC.

Yep and the Fortress ITX is a new datacenter in and of its own so it should be on the list.

I think that HTTPme & Voxtreme are at FortressITX now also... please correct me if I am wrong...

Some other major ones, not sure if would vouch for their quality, are Burst.NET located in PA and Managed.com located in CA. Those two would be great choices if you're looking for backup solutions because of the extremely low pricing they carry.

With regard to Redbus you may want to split that entry up as they have a number of physical locations/buildings. Redbus 1, 2 and 3 are in London and there are a number of other locations throughout Europe: http://www.interhouse.net/datacentre/locations/locations.htm

If you ended up in spam database-listed IP blocks, you can request reassignment. Cyber Wurx has tons of IP space, and can swap you out easily.

Also, I believe SonataWeb is also GNAX from recent conversations with them.

As far as I am aware & to what I have read CredibleHost no longer has any servers at EV1, they only have servers at DedicatedNow & Boca Raton.

I've decided to make a small website with a Google map of this data center list. Here it is.. http://www.thegeonet.com/

I found it kind of inefficent to search through a list when trying to locate a datacenter, so I felt a map would do nicely. It's prepopulated with the ~45 US data centers on the list, including hosts which reside at the data center. If you'd like, you can easily add or modify data centers and hosts; I'm going to review any changes, just to avoid spam, but otherwise you're free to do whatever you'd like.

I just made this as a nice little service. If you like it, feel free to contribute by adding any datacenter info you know. If not, just let me know what you think I should do to improve and I'll do it.

Just wanted to let you know.. I've added the UK DC's from the list to the map, as well as a few others DC's in the US.

Probably best to move HTTPme from FORTRESS ITX and put them under ONE WILSHIRE. HTTPme has older servers in FORTRESS ITX, but new servers are in the ONE WILSHIRE cage, in LA.

Aussie Bob, what are you going to do when that upcoming massive earthquake hits southern California and the entire area is without power for weeks (maybe months)?

Are there secondary servers located elsewhere that your customer's sites will resolve to automatically?

I don't think southern California is a very good place to be hosting from.
They are long overdue for some serious destruction out there.

That's right. I sold in 2004. HTTPme is owned by Steven from insiderhosting.com.

I know that list is not correct fora number of reasons, addr.com recently had an outage during the cogent incident, and they said during that time they are in a COGENT datacenter :)

In addition to that DIYHosting is in Houston, and Dinix is not at edeltacom, but WebHostPlus(whereever they are).

That 'update' does reflect the updates people have posted it seems.

Bit of an update for the UK list for you...

DONHOST has been bought out by Pipex, I'm not sure if they still have their own datacentre, or if they still have I don't know how long it'll last, I think the brand's being run down.

& contrary to previously reported, Serversure is the name of the hosting company, not ServerSecure. Friendly guys, one of the last places to avoid call centres. They host my servers, & are very understanding about me visiting when I break things...
