Hello,

I recently upgraded a motherboard on my server. I was running a 3com NIC, but the new motherboard has an onboard intel NIC. So, during the installation, I opted to go with the new NIC, and un-installed the old one. It then asked me for networking information, which I entered. Now, only my main IP is working on my server, and none of the IP's that I am using for my clients are working. I am running red hat 7.1 and cpanel / WHM .

Any suggestions you can give me would be great!

Thanks!

Do you want us to guess the operating system

Well, I said Red Hat 7.1 at the very end.

I'm sorry, I guess I should have made this more clear. Any suggestions?

Hmmm... Now they are slowly starting to become active. One by one, and randomly... If I ping from a server in asia, it appears that they are all active.

This is very odd... Does it have to do with some sort of IP propogation that I am unaware of???

type "lsmod" and "ifconfig" and post the results, maybe even "netstat -rn".

If you have taken IP's that were bound to one NIC and now have bound to a new NIC, this new NIC has a different MAC address then the previous NIC. Different networking equipment above you susch as routers and some higher end switches use these MAC addresses to direct IP traffic. These devices cache these IP Address/MAC Address combinations in an ARP table. They should all come up over time as the new MAC address propagates to these ARP tables. (I am not a networking wiz, but I believe this is pretty accurate)

Thank you jrpark! That makes sense. I figured it had to be something like that when they started popping up. I just wish I didn't pull my hair out for 3 hours over that last night :)

Thanks!

you should be able to clear your arp cache on your router or switch.

I do have a switch, but I don't think it is the problem (pehaps it could be, I don't know). It is just a 3com 8-port 10/100 switch, no fancy features, sort of the "desktop version".

I don't own the routers, so I can't clear their cache...

I'm noticing long delays in getting emails (sometimes 4-5 hours). I'm thinking this has to be related to the IP problems, correct? Should this all fix itself over a certain amount of time, or should I jump in there and try to get my COLO to clear the ARP cache on their routers?

Oh yeah, one last thing... If these problems should fix themselves given time, how long should I expect to wait? It's been about 14 hours now. The sites are all working fine, but as I said above the email is still slow.

Thanks for all your input guys!

Hmmm... it's been about 24 hours now and email is still not making it through. Everything else is working fine, just not email.

Does anyone have any insight?

Thanks!
