What are you going to be doing on that system? Unless you're serving a lot of https traffic, it is computational overkill.

Oh, and I'm not quite sure you want to use sdram with a 850 chipset motherboard. ;)

Ditch the p4, get a p3... lots of quesitons about the future of the p4 (the current edition) and the p3 works far better in most servers.

Thank you for your quick replies

hehe um u sure i cant use that ram  lol typo

well ill be using it on 5 domains that dont get much traffic at all and 2 big file sites
that get about 350,000 a month hits each and about 40 gigs of trasfer each
there will be heavy php and mysql loads on it

i will also prob host a couple other sites that dont get much traffic at all for people

and use it as a domain forwarder on about 20 domains

if i went p3 do you think i should get like a dual 866 system**have it at home but its annoying having to disable one everytime i want to go on 98**

And i get all my parts at great prices so im not to worried about the price for example this motherboard and cpu combo costs me 130.00

I wouldn't bother with dual processors if I were you; a single P3 or P4 will do fine. You'll probably find that the system is vastly overpowered for what you're doing even with a single P3 -- but I guess that's better than the alternative.

One thing to remember, however, is that when colocating, cheap hardware isn't. If you buy a cheap motherboard, a cheap power supply, cheap RAM, etc. then you will have to spend far more when you have to visit the colocation facility to fix stuff.

Cheap hardware may be fine for a PC which is sitting on a desk in front of you, but it certainly isn't when you have to drive across town to get to it.

I would concentrate more on RAM than on processor speed. A single P3 866 would do the trick, but with intensive mysql and php sites you'll need a lot of ram (we have several very intensive sites and the machine has slightly over 1GB of ram). I would get a motherboard that supports at least 1.5GB, just in case you need it in the future.

I wouldn't put a P4 into a server just yet. Actually, I don't think I've seen anyone put a P4 into a server...

Yes mem is something that u should think bout if u are using a db driven site, or many of them. Last thing u want is to spend good cheez on a Processor and Box and then have it be bogged down with low mem.. 1-1.5g RAM should do.

Ditch the IBM ULTRASTAR they are nothing but trouble we have had so many go out its unreal also there is a class action case on IBM for that drive.
