Which laptop do you think I should get?
SONY VAIO GR270 or Dell 8100

Well, right now im on a vaio. I love this thing, not to great, but small light and portable. I vote for vaio only because I have one and Im not familure with with the dell.

I like verio too.

i have heard tons of horror stories about dell laptops, even heard one of the selling someone a laptop with a used vid card and hd in it.

Not sure how the screens are on a Dell, but i've always thought the vaio's were amazing. If you compare them at a store, it just seems like a far better picture than the rest of them.

I did a ton of reasearch on different laptops, and apparant. sony has one of the worst support departments around, so as long as you dont have any problems with your vaio your fine but if you do your in big trouble, anyways after about 3 months of research, i choose toshiba, they have one of the best hostorys of reliability and their supports supposed to be decent too. As far as dell i dont know, some people are dell fanatics and some hate dell...

I used to work at a hospital where we had a number of Vaios. They're not very sturdy, little parts break all the time, it costs a fortune to get them fixed, and their support department sucks big time. I would never buy one. The Dells have a much better reputation, but I don't have any first-hand knowledge of them. I've used IBM ThinkPads for the past 7 years but I'm not too thrilled with their current downhill trend, and will probably try a Dell next.

Im on a dell 4k right now, and its overall pretty darn good.

I imagine sony is alright as well, but im not sure the comparison is correct.

You are comparing the dell 8100 which is a desktop laptop to a light weight sony.

You might want to look at the 2500 series or 4k serious for more portability and lighter weight.

Overall i dont know how dell support is, because i have never called them for any of my pcs, and sony never used.


Also dont buy the latest proc or what not and get ram at crucial. Most of these companies rape you on that.

The processor by the time you get it is outdated, and ram is cheaper

I have a 800mhz with 512 mb of ram and its pretty darn good

Anyone out there have much experience with putting linux on laptops? I am currently trying to decide between the same 2 laptops & am leaning toward the Dell simply because I know someone who successfully runs linux on it, and I have not heard anything (good or bad) about linux on the Vaios. (Hmm... wonder if that's anything like Jambalaya on the Bayou... Anyway...)

Toshiba is the only way you should ever go

I've had experience with both dell & dell. I own a dell right now and it's not exactly light. The sony is a nice light weight thing and hasn't broken out on my dad just yet. My grandma has an old toshiba (slightly big, slow, win95...) I didn't like it but she loves it. Everyone has different experiences and these companies are big enough that if you don't something's gone awry. :D

Sony only looks nice but they lack support and the quality of their products.....

I also have a Toshiba and have been very pleased with it. I haven't needed any support yet, so I don't know what their support department is like... but the quality is good.

I have a Toshiba and my friend has a Dell. My Toshiba is older,
but it is faster than the dell. My Toshiba is a 700mhz P3 and the
Dell is a 1 Ghz P3.
