Chicken 12-16-2001, 09:44 PM You might be surprised it all traces back to Donhost. Shocker there...
What's with everyone selling hosting on ebay these days
Fremont Servers 12-16-2001, 10:35 PM 9 people made a bid on it. :stickout

Have you seen one with 10,000MB disk space for $25/year. :D
All can be found on eBay.
Franky 12-17-2001, 12:30 AM Who is Donhost anyways?

Fremont Servers 12-17-2001, 12:34 AM I went to donhost.com and saw their reseller plans.
I think this seller is making big money.
His current active auctions on web hosting sum up to $1000+
I feel like being a reseller for Donhost.
:D

Just went to Donhost, here is the price list:
Monthly £35.99
Quarterly £98.99
Annually £359.99
Is it a big LOST for this guy to offer the same plan (50,000 MB transfer) for about 60% off its actual cost?
How can he survive?

Easy and Simple!
For those who reach a certain amount of bandwidth, just refund him his money. There are many ways, and this is only one of it.

Yeah, he is selling it like peanuts :D
But seriously, I still can't figure out, how on earth can somebody offer this?
Does anybody have any comments on the rationale behind his business plan???

Could you elaborate this please?
2Grumpy 12-17-2001, 02:22 AM Easy, no one uses 1/100th of what he's "selling" them. If anyone uses even a 1/10th of it, guess what? They are found to be in violation of some TOS rule or another and boot!
I met someone who had 570 domains on one of these plans. Musta made a nice bit of pocket change.
Donhost themselves well, hell you can read these forums as easy as I can :D
MarcD 12-17-2001, 02:35 AM Tell you what if he offered me 10 gigs of space
with unlimited transfer
i bet you i wouldnt be with him long
becuase i could defintely fill up those 10 gigs

From the TOS at http://www.gotos.com/cgi-bin/hosting.pl?policy, I believe they will close your account with this reason, Misuse of Resources.

I positively love this line:
Content relating to Hacking, Cracking, Warez and IRC is not allowed.
Since when is CONTENT relating to IRC illegal or even really all that undesirable?
Let them find a SINGLE MP3 regardless of source (up and coming bands need not apply) and you're gone immediately I hear.

I guess it is IRC bots that are NOT allowed

Well, I guess that's their way of covering it but most bots don't run as part of website content :D
It's a very very broad TOS that basically allows them to whack anyone they want at any time, if I remember right they last line of it said something to "we can deem anything we want unacceptable" (of course not spelled out that clearly).
I guess honestly a good AUP or TOS will pretty much make it so you can remove any customer at any time. The TOS I borrowed (hey I know he paid a lawyer to write it so why not use it?) pretty much lets me cancel any account for any reason (I actually read it the other day, I prefer "plainspeak" to that lawyer mumbo jumbo, guess that's the redneck in me).
I suppose it falls under the heading "CYA"
Im emailing ebay, telling them that unlimited bandwidth/transfer/hits is all false advertising. Ill see what happens and see their response.

bombino 12-17-2001, 07:09 PM Can you even sell intangible services on ebay?

Perhaps you should promote your Unlimband universally. I totally support it :)

So, they're not a Donhost reseller, wonder if they have a dedicated server with them?
The biggest baddest dedicated server they list had 60 gigs harddrive and 20 gigs of bandwidth, I don't see much "unlimited" there.
Maybe a colocated server? 5Gigs of transfer, 10pounds per gig over (OUCH) definitely not unlimited.
Wonder how gotos.com would handle it if say, any half successful band bid on that auction and made available every one of their songs in full 256bit MP3 format to thousands of ravenous fans? Heck I remember one time someone posted a 6 meg video to a web site I helped run and it was downloaded 2560 times the first day (you can do the math yourself, but it's a lot of gigs) and within the first 2 weeks or so of that video being available it generated 110gigs of transfers by itself (not to mention the other crap we posted on there generating several more gigs!).
I HATE it when re-sellers deny that they are re-sellers. We can clearly see that you are a re-seller of Donhost, but please don't say stuff that's not true! It pisses me off. If you're a re-seller it's okay, but don't hide it, (we all have to start somewhere don't we?)
Anyways, Unlimited Dosn't exsist and never will, No matter what Donhost says THEY ARE LYING. :smash:
Fremont Servers 12-20-2001, 05:40 PM I don't think they have a dedicated server at DonHost.
It is very unwise to sell web hosting plans like that if you have a dedicated server.
I want to see how DonHost reacts if they see what their resellers are doing. The one on eBay pockets the money and let DonHost handle the headache. :stickout

Oh, well now that I re-read I see what you mean, I did mistake you for a gotos.com tech support guy! I was like "holy crap they actually posted?" :D
Haha they've got to be a reseller, a user of the colo, or have a dedicated server with Donhost, because people can lie, but IPs don't ;)

Franky 01-09-2002, 07:48 PM *** U P D A T E ***
It's almost one month already (minus 1 week) since the beginning of this thread. Here is what I did: I decided to give it a shot by bidding on this auction (http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1309910202).
What I had in mind was that if I didn't get what I bid for, I'd just loose $1. If it turned out that the seller delivered what he offered, then it's just my luck :)
Guess what? Two days after the bidding was over, I'd still not received any email from the seller. So I decided to contact him, but no response whatsoever. Well, since I haven't paid any cents to the seller, I just did nothing.
This morning, I was surprised when I checked the seller's feedback (http://cgi2.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback&userid=kingfind). It's full of reds, if you know what I mean. Even worse, he is no longer a registered user at eBay, i.e. he's GONE!!!
Well, I have no intention to attack the seller here, since I don't loose anything. I just want to share a big lesson that: anything that is too good to be true, well most likely IT IS !
Franky
Fremont Servers 01-09-2002, 08:01 PM Hey, the seller of the auction is Not a registered user. :stickout
Incognito 01-09-2002, 10:06 PM If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

At least you didn't pay yet.
