View Full Version : Registrars...disable transfers?
Rydel 07-01-2004, 10:42 AM I'm thinking about registering a domain with that site that has them for $3.99. Obviously, they have sky high renewal prices.
If I were to buy a domain from them, could they stop me from transferring to a different company?
dmaven 07-01-2004, 10:51 AM They could, read their terms and conditions clearly. There are a few registrars that make it nearly impossible to transfer away
fewcoin 07-01-2004, 10:58 AM I would also email them and ask if transfers are hitch free. There is one cheap registrar that tells you in the TOS, you can transfer away, but they don't tell you, you have to fax them paperwork etc. If it's a valuable domain to you, I would register it where the reputation is proven.

Rydel 07-01-2004, 11:02 AM Here is my discussion with their support guy: (my name isn't really Brad lol)
Richard: Hi
Brad: Hello
Brad: If I were to register a domain for one year, could I transfer it to a different registrar instead of renewing it with you? I see the renew price is going to be really high...
Richard: Yes, you have the right to move registrars as well as hosters

Yes, many do it now despite the numerous complaints they get. I'm glad you have contacted their support and got the answer you wanted. I myself prefer to spend the extra dollar or two and play it safe. Prices these days aren't near as bad as the old days.
lemel 07-01-2004, 12:50 PM i suppose the registrar is domainsforfree.com (read my comments about them in other thread)
RydelOnline, its better to get their confirmation about Tranfer to other registrar in writing (through email).
Bashar 07-02-2004, 05:52 PM i hate the 'yes you can' and later on 'but you have to pay transfer out fee of $25 per domain'
just ask correctly.
taheri6 07-04-2004, 03:02 AM Personally, I would just avoid it altogether. Do not register a domain there that you wouldnt mind loosing.
If you would mind loosing any domain, ever, at all - then I would suggest going somewhere else and paying a couple extra bucks. I mean jeez people, its only like $3!
I loose more then that in my couch everyday!
snoop 07-04-2004, 09:27 AM If they are selling at $3.99 they are either prepared to lose money or there is a catch involved which you will find out about later.

I'm interested in cleaning service of your couch.. so that i can pay extra to the decent registrar :D
twidnet 07-04-2004, 12:13 PM I agree with snoop. Something sounds weird about that deal. If it were me, I'd register it myself somewhere else just to have the peace of mind.

dan: i heard u don't allow the domain to transfer to other registrar?
Joseph: where did you hear that?
dan: one of our client told.. i think he heard from some forum
dan: is it true?
Joseph: yes, its true
dan: so that means if the client does not want to renew with you then he has to forget that domain?
Joseph: the client must renew with us
dan: ok.. one more thing.. u don't allow the Registrant info also to be changed?
Joseph: sure, it can be udated
dan: but i heard with ur domain manage only Admin, Billing & Technical contacts can be changed, Not the Registrant contact
Joseph: that is correct
dan: so Registrant info cannot be updated right?
Joseph: right
Joseph: Are you interested in a hosting plan?

Weird.
But most if not all registrars do allow all types of domain
record changes (except the domain spelling itself :D), be
it online or by fax request.
Goes to show you get what you pay for.
