I decided to post the thee most important URLs I use for a long time now to check all the web hosting companies, their validly and their network performance (of course up to a logical and technical level)

1. www.free.pro.gr : (Domain Investigator)
This is really a must. You give the IP or the address of the site to investigate and it returns domain name information from the whois of the registrar, info from arin.net to which company the ip belong, extended dns information SOA,MX,A…. , the software versions and platforms each site has with versions and other details for web, ftp,pop3,smtp,nntp and other ports together with traceroute.
Honestly this tool helped me to find at least 5 web host providers with poor to nothing bandwidth and discover to which networks known web hosting providers are connected, what type of platforms they prefer and much more. A certain bookmark according to my opinion

2. netmechanic.com : http://www.netmechanic.com - http://www.netmechanic.com/server_check/site_monitoring.htm
This is known to a lot of people but just for users they don't know this set of services can help find how stable web hosting companies are by pinging once per 15 minutes for the next 8 hours. After that they send you and email and go at the url they give you to see them. Do this for 2-3 days to have an average number and not just once.

3. www.all-nettools.com : http://www.all-nettools.com
Very good set of online tools at different categories and networking of course

I hope someone will find these links helpful

Almost worthless. It can't tell the difference between a server outage and a downed connection somewhere between the hosting company and their location.

JayC you're right.

However i still prefer www.free.pro.gr cause i have also a free email account with them and the url is quite shorter.

Anyway i like better the community atmosphere there together with their other services so i don't feel bad for one popunder (not popup) and one banner.

(Sometimes also i connect faster with www.free.pro.gr than the other site)

Both are good. :-)

Anyone else with interesting links like these :

1. www.free.pro.gr :agree:
2. www.netmechanic.com
3. www.all-nettools.com ;)
4. www.samspade.org

I got a tad lost. Did that first site portscan for services? Some hosts servers might start alerting itself of it and block the scanning server ie incorrect results.

This isn't really related but I found a really neat tool the other day
called phpsysinfo that gives you details such as
Uptime, CPU, Memory, LM Sensors, SCSI, IDE, PCI, Ethernet, Floppy, and Video Information
on your host. :D

It can be installed in your home directory.
