View Full Version : Best Virtual Servers : CagedTornado Diginode or others?
SONICdomains 12-16-2001, 02:06 PM I looked at both CagedTornado's virtual server plan and Diginode's VS plan. Diginode's plan looks much better but he is not a regular poster
Lets compare: Diginode VS. CagedTornado
5GB Storage vs. 3GB Storage
25GB Transfer vs. 15GB Transfer
Partitioning (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=26486&highlight=cagedtornado) vs. FreeVSD
15 accnts on a min 1.4ghz computer vs. 10 accnts on ?PIII computer
Redhat 7.2 vs Redhat 6.0 (that must be an misprint or something)
Both have full root
7 day free trial free setup vs. 1/2 off first month but $10 setup
1 IP vs 1 IP
Advanced server in the works vs. Vortex is the max
$50 / month vs $50 / month
Of course this all means jack **** if either has unreliable servers
or unreliable tech support.
Does anyone have experience with either of the two? Dixiesys ?
Can anyone recommend other virtual server / private server hosts which have similar features for $50 / month or less?
Regards,
I dont have a diginode account but I do have an account at CT. You must be mistaken if you think it's a full root account. It's more like a admin account where you can a lot of things root can but not everything. It's hard to explain. As for CT, Dan (CT) has been very helpful with the questions and problems I've thrown at him. Although support questions sometimes take a while to get replied to, he does take care of the problem. I can't check right now but the server has an uptime of around 25+ days. I'm very pleased with the account and the service provided by CagedTornado.
cactus 12-16-2001, 03:44 PM Well, I have an account with cagedtornado.com and is for a very good reason. As I am web designer cums reseller, I am more interested in my needs and planning. Sorry I won't be able to compare the two as I am looking at a different perspective.
1) Reseller for www.splashhost.com
Advantages:
i) Low overheads to sell hosting space.
ii) No server maintenance.
iii)Provide clients with control panel for their usage.
2) Virtual server at www.cagedtornado.com
Advantages:
i)Can implement special projects for clients not availaible in reseller packages.
ii) Have access to a server and don't have to pay hefty bills.
iii) Suitable for web designing business where the clients don't require a control panel.
SONICdomains 12-17-2001, 05:14 PM Anyone use diginode.net?
tetra 12-18-2001, 01:00 AM I'm watching this thread with interest because I may be looking for a new virtual server account soon. Currently I have a VS account at www.digitaldaze.net. I'm very happy with their service, no complaints at all, everything works well, but I will need more disk space soon. I get 100 Mb at DigitalDaze for $45 per month. The next step up is 400 Mb for $80 per month paid quarterly. These prices make the packages at CagedTornado and Diginode look very attractive but they also make me wonder has much of a 'you get what you pay for' situation this is.
One thing that DigitalDaze has but the others don't (correct me if I'm wrong) is shared SSL. Apache on my VS is automatically setup to do SSL with their wildcarded (*.securenow.com) certificate so I can go https://mydomain.com but of course that gives a browser warning because the domains don't match so for a small fee they will point a subdomain like mysite.securenow.com to my IP and I make my PHP script use that domain instead of my own for the one page on my site that needs SSL. Its a system that works very well and I find it a very useful feature and it would be a pain to lose because I really don't want to mess with the hassle of getting an SSL certificate. I am only developing a spare time hobby site which may hopefully turn into a business but I really do need the flexibility and security of a VS rather than shared hosting.
BTW, I'm not sure what 'virtualizing' software DigitalDaze is using. The O/S is FreeBSD. Is there a command or something to look out for to figure this out? I don't think its a secret, I just having asked them.
Cheers
Ross
I saw that there are three votes for "Others". Anyone mind telling who are these "Others" ?

I signed up a few days ago and so far have the same impression.

I'm pretty sure someone from RoseHosting.com voted for other.
Their plan is:
$0 Set Up
$49.95/month
4 GB Space
35 GB Transfer
1 IP
1000 Accounts/Users/POPs
30 Virtual Domains (dunno how they can limit this, you can make infinite virtual domains on an account using SSI and HTTP 1.1)
The servers they say they use are
Dual ~1GHZ PIII
1.5 GB RAM
Linux 6.2 OS
Webmin
It don't know what kind of "virtualizer" they use. Perhaps they can tell us since they post here sometimes.
Also, don't be afraid to reply, I'm not a 15 year old running a web hosting company, I need the virtual servers to host sites for a few web design clients who know *nothing* about computers and to host demos.

RoseHosting 12-18-2001, 05:46 PM We use FreeVSD with some proprietary modifications.
We also have several different plans to choose from.

palmtree 12-18-2001, 07:39 PM I would check out RemarkableHosting.com
They have Ensim powered VPS starting at $34.95/mo
A Reseller account is around $79.95/mo..
Just a thought..

SONICdomains 12-23-2001, 08:09 PM Great, diginode is now offering a month free to WHT members, just type in WHT into the customization box when signing up.
This is not going to help me at all, I was leaning towards remarkable but now I'm banging my head on the table trying to figure out who to go with.
I like being able to install whatever I want with BSD Jail equivalent. I don't like the fact that the response time is sometimes 8 hours long (during the day, not like 12am-8am).
Matthew has done a fine job of answering my emails within an hour.
Rosehosting and Dan@ cagedtornado have taken a little bit longer to respond.
I also dislike being forced to use RH 6.2 @ rosehosting, and that it will be hard to upgrade to future kernels @ remarkable because of ensim. Then again Matthew was a high up employee at Ensim so that's a plus..
So many questions... so many choices....

palmtree 12-24-2001, 02:37 PM Hey Eugenie,
I am a Remarkable customer. I'm using their reseller Webppliance v3- for $79.95/mo.
I have nothing but good things to say about Matt and his company. Tech support has been awesome. Network speed is great. Server speed is also awesome.
I usually use ICQ to contact Matt (which he is usually on most of the time) and I get responses right away. I've had a couple of problems that took 1 or 2 hours to fix, but he let me know how it was going through the whole thing and when it was resolved.
I've also talked with Matt on the phone about some of his future offerings and I think he has a great perspective on the industry.
As for upgrading kernels, etc.. I wouldn't see a problem with that. I would just ask Matt about it. The Ensim platform enables him to upgrade stuff at the click of a button (not to for sure about kernel updates), but I've updated Apache, Perl, some of the mods, etc.. without any problems.. I believe Version 3 of webppliance allows alot more flexibility on dealing with system level components. Just ask him (Matt) of the potential in your situation..
