View Full Version : Site5 and more...
AFitzwater 11-02-2000, 10:13 PM Okay, I have signed up for Site5.com webhoting and they said that it would be 24 hours to activate the account. It's been since then. Do any of you recommend Site5 at all?
Also, I was wanting to host sites on my account. I got Site5 because of the subdomains. In the fine print, it says unless I have the Ultimate Plan (most expensive, go figure), I could do that even though I purchased the Webmaster one and it comes with 50. So, I get these domains and I can't host other sites with it. This does blow chunks and I was wondering if anyone knows of another host which actually allows me to host subdomains. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
Félix C.Courtemanche 11-02-2000, 10:34 PM Do a little search on this board for hosts. The majority of the recommended ones have some kind of 'reseller' or 'extra domain per account' deal that will allow you to have seeral domains under the same account.
AFitzwater 11-02-2000, 10:34 PM Here is a list of what I need (at minimum... more is always welcome :)):
- 150MB of space
- 2GB transfer
- 15 POP accounts
- 3 FTP logins
- CGI-bin
- Subdomains (which I can host other peoples sites on)
- Online Control Panel
Thats the main stuff I really need. Any help would be appreciated. If you know any that don't charge more than $20 a month and a setup fee more than $30, please tell me. Thanks.
AFitzwater 11-02-2000, 10:35 PM Okay, thank you.
-Edward- 11-03-2000, 12:14 PM i have a friend who is hosted at site5.com shes asked 3 times now for the mail to be redirected to everyone.net and they keep telling her it's done but it isnt shes thinking of moving once again. She doesnt have much look with webhosts.
AFitzwater 11-03-2000, 12:18 PM Yeah, it seems they never got my order in so I just cancelled and went with hostrocket.com. They said they were adding 25 subdomains free for each account plan, so with their prices, it worked out for me.
-Edward- 11-03-2000, 12:30 PM did HostRocket give you a date and time of release on this feature?.
AFitzwater 11-03-2000, 12:47 PM They said that later next week or the week after. No solid release date. But they said that all existing users will be getting this feature as well, so I signed up last night.
jonelin 11-03-2000, 02:25 PM hrm... i asked that question too. while it is moot in your case since you went with someone else, i'll post here what i was told in case anyone else was wondering.
with the webmaster plan, they don't mind if you are hosting a few friends, family, etc. they just don't want the webmaster plan to be used for mass hosting or something like envy.nu where users can sign up for accounts. that plan doesn't really have the resources to cover something like that.
and i signed up late on a saturday night and was set up by monday night. not 24 hours, but i'll cut some slack for my midnight weekend compulsiveness! ;)
gthorley 11-03-2000, 02:31 PM Question re sub domains. Are we talking http://www.mydomain.xxx pointed to its own directory on the site or somename.mydomain.xxx
jonelin 11-03-2000, 02:36 PM they offer both. with the webmaster plan you get 50 subdomains (directory.domain.com points to domain.com/directory). they also offer a couple (3 in the ultimate plan, not sure with webmaster plan) of redirects (domain2.com points to domain1.com/domain2).
AFitzwater 11-03-2000, 02:36 PM I am not sure if you understand your last message about subdomains. Which service are you reffering to, site5 or hostrocket? I think that site5 offers 3 domain pointers for the one I wanted. I don't know if hostrocket lets you point domains or not, but I just wanted subdomains with my account. You may have to elaborate more on what you were saying if I did not reply correctly
jonelin 11-03-2000, 02:38 PM i was referring to site5.
Chicken 11-03-2000, 08:46 PM I was noticing that there was some confusion there. AFitzwater cancelled his site5 account (even though it was just set up) and signed on with hostrocket I believe. It was a quick transition of subjects, so maybe I have ti wrong too?
AFitzwater 11-03-2000, 09:14 PM Heh, I can understand why you got so confused. I read through all the posts and got a little lost. Any ways, here is the low-down:
I wanted to know if Site5.com really was reliable because the did not actiavate my account within 24 hours like they said. I got a reply saying they never got my order and to resubmit it. I started reading through their TOS in the meantime to see what I can and cannot do. One of the things was I can't host other people with my space, even though they gave me 50 subdomains (for what purpose, I have no clue).
So, when they said they never got the hosting application, I decided to not resubmit it and look for another host. There, I came upon HostRocket.com. They said that in the next week or so, they would be adding 25 subdomains to each of their account plans. So, with the prices and features, I decided to switch.
That brings us to the present, where everything got confusing :)
Chicken 11-03-2000, 09:46 PM I was close Anthony :) Keep us informated as to the good and bad. This board is better than many as people actually post positive reviews (not just bad ones). It is always nice to hear that someone is having a GOOD experience for a change!
