View Full Version : Choose: Rackshack AMD v. Intel

Of these two Rackshack servers:

AMD with 1 GHz, 1 GB RAM, and 2 x 20 GB Hard Drives

Intel with 1 GHz, 512 MB RAM, and 2 x 40 GB Hard Drives

which do you think is the better buy for Web hosting?

It seems that the main difference, apart from the processors themselves, is that the AMD offers twice as much RAM at the cost of half as much storage space. I could use the extra storage space of the Intel, but I don't want to take a performance hit.

Ask how much a 512MB RAM increase is. If it's cheap (as good RAM is cheap these days) I'd take the Intel.

How much do they charge for another 512MB RAM?

Their Web site mentions a 256 -> 512 memory upgrade for $49/setup, $29/month; but nothing about a 512 -> 1GB upgrade.

Let's assume they do offer it, and the prices are the same: is a 512 mem boost worth $29/month on an Intel box?

I think ram upgrade should be a onetime fee.
It makes no sense to charge monthly fee for an extra 512MB RAM.

More then likely the servers dont support more then 512mb ram

That is correct..

I think I would rather have the Intel for the sake of stability, if the heatsink falls off on of the Duron, it's toast, and who knows how long it'll take them to fix it. It also kind of depends on what kind of sites are going to be on it too though.. I'd rather have the Duron w/ 1GB of RAM for database intensive sites... overall though, the Intel box.

The intel boxes at RS top at 512.. like the RaQ's...

Thinking of that tomshardware.com article, aren't you? Most AMD chips don't really have that problem, but a more important point is that heatsinks don't really "fall off". In fact, they would have to be improperly installed in the first place in order to do so.

We've had a few AMD chips shut down (no smoke, no flames, no lasting damage) due to cooling problems, and it's usually because of poor airflow due to heatsink/fan design. So we've gone through a number of designs looking for the best.

AMD whips Intel in most areas, except that unfortunately ASUS doesn't understand that for servers, we would like to get motherboards with Intel Ethernet and VGA onboard. They do this for Intel motherboards, but not for AMD :(

I would go with Intel boxes as well. I mean, for the price its worth the 2, 40 gig hard drives over the 2, 20 gigs.

Thanks for the information and advice.

I do like the Intel box with its spacious storage, but I'm still concerned about the RAM.

If we use a scale of 1-9, with a RAQ at 1 and an AMD/1 GB RAM at 9, where is the Intel/512 MB RAM? (No offense to the RAQ!)

If you're using it for basic web hosting for other clients, then how many of them would need 80GIG of storage?! I would go with AMD over Intel any day :D. 2x20GB is plenty enough for a web hosting company, uness you're going to be allowing large file downloads which would explain the use of Rackshack and the 300GIG of bandwidth, LOL.
