What does it mean when some companys say they offer a shared SSL Cert. How is this possible. I was under the impression that the cert had to be linked to a specific domain name, not just a computer's host name.

Here's an example...

You buy your account from 123host.com, and they offer shared SSL.

You have your domain somedomain.com, that you use for everything, except for SSL.

If you use their cert, you use their servername, possibly: https://secure.123host.com/~somedomain/a-secure.html

Depending on the wording it may also mean that they have it like https://www.123host.com/~username
