View Full Version : Recommendations on a switch
AlaskanWolf 12-15-2001, 12:29 AM We have the Allied Telesyn AT-3726XL Ethernet Switch (24 port) with SNMP / Telnet / Web access, anyone got any recommendations on a new switch?
This current one we have, its a EOF switch (dont make it anymore) and in the last month the switch is constently going down, more or less freezing telnet / web access and killing mrtg reports, but traffic still flows though without a hassle
RackMy.com 12-15-2001, 12:54 AM Forget CISCO (I know about 10 people will recommend them here) :)
We run HP 2524s on our end nodes and they work flawlessly. They have all the jazz you need, and then some, plus you get a lifetime warrantee. HP's support is great. We had an issue with some Cisco 6509s not talking correctly to some HP 2524s & Foundry L3s and they spent many hours with us. They also beat speed tests on similar switches by other manufactures, including Cisco.
Hope that helps!
cbaker17 12-15-2001, 01:52 AM Id recommend extreme switches (extremenetworks.com) weve also used hp and i can say the extremes are alot more stable and can handle alot more traffic, and their layer 3 so they can do routing etc.... of course their alot more money. I would tend to agree with rackmy on cisco products, they seem to have gone downhill in terms of quality etc
Noldar 12-15-2001, 10:30 AM We use Nortel BayStack switches at the corporate office of the company that I work for and have been very happy with them. We also have an HP switch at one of our other locations and it has been very reliable as well.
allan 12-15-2001, 01:54 PM I have to go against the grain and say that I love Cisco switches :D, especially the 6509s and the 7600s.
I've also been playing with EmergeCore switches, which are kind of cool, they have a Linux-based OS running on their ASICs. So far they have been okay, but I have not been able to do any load testing on them.
cyansmoker 12-15-2001, 07:28 PM I never read anyone commenting about them, but I like Alcatel (former Xylan) switches.
I especially enjoy how easy their are to set up.
AlaskanWolf 12-16-2001, 08:37 PM I think i found the problem with my current switch
I turned off the cron for MRTG every 5 minutes, works great, turn it back on (mrtg cron stuff), then bang, about 1-2 hours later, switch freezes as stated in org. post
I also thought activating Trasmit Pacing, and this is what i got http://mrtg.thehideout.net/64.71.165.240_26.html , seems it keeps all the traffic going steady without bursting
Ideas for any known fixes etc?

Are those the HP Procurve switches with 24 port 10/100 ? and do they come with SNMP installed? nm found out they do
I been looking at the HP 4000m, anyone think thats a good deal?
DanDaMan 12-17-2001, 10:35 AM We use Netopia (www.netopia.com). I do not know if they are better or worse than what you are using, but ours works great. I am not at my office right now, so I could not tell you the model number, but let me know if you need it and I will post it later.
Also, any opinions/comparisons on Netopia hardware would be great, as I am not familiar with a lot of the manufacturers.
RackMy.com 12-17-2001, 11:49 AM Are those the HP Procurve switches with 24 port 10/100 ? and do they come with SNMP installed? nm found out they do Yes, SNMP is already installed and working (and works great!) The 4000 is very nice, but has a small backplane (3.8 Gbps) so if you have a lot of inter-switch traffic you could run into issues (especially if you fully populate it with 80 ports). That's why we use the 2524s because they have a 9.6 Gbps backplane and fit our network topography better.
But, you will not go wrong with either one :)
Noldar 12-17-2001, 12:12 PM HP is having a "buy one, get one free" type promotion on some of their switches. Here's a couple of links to the claim form and the terms and conditions.
