View Full Version : managed.com
The name of the company is managed.com, but it doesn't say anywhere I can see whether or not they are managed.
With a server from them, would I have to do my own linux/apache patches etc?
Thanks.
KarlZimmer 06-25-2004, 12:27 PM From everything I've seen they're far from managed.

They provide unmanaged servers. If you review their website, you can see all the details.

flockey86 06-25-2004, 12:45 PM i thought it was a funny name too, but apparently they're reliable and have great deals.

That's debatable.
mainarea 06-25-2004, 01:08 PM They're reliable if you never need support and don't care if their network goes down while they attempt to add/remove providers or change BGP preferences... (see http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=287082 from just a few days ago) :D Your mileage with their support may vary, but I had 33 hours of downtime due to techs not knowing how to fix their own configuration issues & not documenting that they pulled the plug on my server when they thought it was being attacked.

In that case, everyone's reliable! ;)
athlonkmf 06-25-2004, 01:33 PM Last few days I've been helped very well by the people at managed.com because of a server ownership transfer. They responded very fast (except for the billing-department) and are very helpfull.
For technical support I haven't really need them much. Except for one time where i've accidently put the wrong entry in lilo.conf
The backup-helpdesk (after office-hours) did not have the knowledge to fix it and suggested a OS-restore... But the real technical staff fixed it easily.
As for their network, in three months that I'm a customer there were a hiccup of 1-3 hours where access to their network was not 100%, so their network is reliable enough for me.
flockey86 06-25-2004, 03:13 PM so, basically, just don't make any major configuration mistakes that will take your server offline, don't send out or get attacked by spam, and hope they don't screw something up and you'll be fine? sounds good to me for their prices.

Not exactly. You can screw up big time when they're at their office. Will get help within a few minutes :)
And remember, you only get 1 OS-restore for free.
ChaosHosting 06-25-2004, 03:46 PM I emailed them to check it out after I was wondering a while back, they are unmanaged.

rickyram56 06-25-2004, 04:46 PM I heard theplanet.com is good but I never tried it myself.
cDedicated.com 06-25-2004, 05:18 PM why they stoped to be managed?

why they stoped to be managed? It was a marketing gimmick, and nothing more. They attracted many new clients with low prices and management, and took away management to cut costs. I can assure you that they never intended to keep the company as a managed offering once they gained a few hundred customers.
