OK here is a short history of how things started :
We have a Cobalt Raq4i that is hosting 2 domains' email/web and dns services. A few weeks ago our current colo 'lost' our IP address, and changed it, although we asked for 3-4 weeks of time to get everything prepared. Either way, they shut off the IP's, and immediately of course, everythign was unavailable.
I quickly registered the new IP numbers to the corresponding nameservers and after a few days we were back up.
One day after, emails stopped working, and we got the Colo to look into it, as the server has not had any email problems since we've had it (2+ Years). They worked on it for almost a week, and could not figure anything out. Messages sent to us were bouncing back with this message : (user@domain.com of course I changed to, as it showed the customer's email address)
-----------------------------------------------------------
The following recipient(s) could not be reached:
'user@domain.com' 6/24/2004 4:27 PM
The e-mail system was unable to deliver the message, but did not report a specific reason. Check the address and try again. If it still fails, contact your system administrator.
<'sender.domain.com' #5.0.0 smtp;554 5.0.0 rewrite: excessive recursion (max 50), ruleset canonify>
------------------------------------------------------------
It seemed to get worse every day as the Colo was trying new things I guess. (That's another story though).
I just told them to stop doing anything, and changed the MX records to point to an external/new mail hosting provider so at least that would be working for the customer.
Through all of this, by the way the webserver has been running just fine. (tomcat also)
Now, we have a new secondary DNS that is- (seems to at least) be working, and primary is still the Cobalt Raq 4i, and the email seems working, but every now and then, and only from a few networks or domains (RCN (ISP)being one of them), emails are getting the same error as above again, randomly.
But we get emails from a lot of other places, and everythign on the new external email provider seems fine, the mx records are all fine.
The Cobalt RAQ4i is not even running sendmail anymore. i totally disabled it a fey days ago.
The customer is going crazy worrying about their email being down again for a week or more.
Anyone have an Idea what I shoudl try and what it could be?
Thanks in advance.
