View Full Version : Recommendations for shared hosting?
WaldoUK 12-13-2001, 05:08 PM Hi,
I've been considering jumping ship from Aletia for a while now, due to their continued problems (and what seems like a bit of a fall from grace for them). The problem is, I need another host with similar features... especially one that offers multi-domains on the one account. This was the main feature that attracted me to Aletia, however, I'm not really sure who else offers this? Other than the multi-hosted domains I would be looking for 100 - 200Mb of space, a reasonable amount of transfer, PHP + several MySQL databases, plus just the usual :)
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
sji2671 12-13-2001, 05:50 PM Hi Waldo, personally I have just used ecommercediscovery , and I know they offer a reseller account with numerous domains, php, mysql.
Their control panel has many many features :-) which we like !!!
Good upload speeds from the UK, and the support from Josh cannot be faultered. I haven't been with them long, but browsed the boards and didn't see anything bad.
WaldoUK 12-13-2001, 06:06 PM Thanks for the recommendation there. Unfortunately, at $35.00 for the cheapest reseller plan, it's a little expensive.
To let everyone else know, it's not really a reseller plan as such that I'm after, more just a standard shared hosting plan that allows me to use multiple domains on one account. At Aletia this was implemented pretty well, so it's something similar I'm after (at the same or cheaper price - $9.95 per month - if possible)
Thanks again for the reply.
sji2671 12-13-2001, 08:32 PM I think $35 for that plan is pretty darn good, however if your not fussy, maybe you should take a normal package with unlimited sub-domains.
Much cheaper deal, and you can use URL masking.
Multiple domains will fall into the resellar category, like it or not. Sub-Domains you can have and as long as you and the clients aint too fussy, it could be the cheaper option for you.

WaldoUK 12-13-2001, 10:50 PM That is what I liked about Aletia. Even on the basic package they offered multiple domains for only $9.95. And that didn't use domain masking (using frames) so that if you accessed a secondary domain it wouldn't constantly show www.mydomain.com in the address bar and on the other hand, when accessing the domain, it didn't show www.firstdomain.com/mydomain in the Loading Bar. It was a very good solution, I'm just after a host who offers a similar package (but without paying the reseller price tag ;))
Any other suggestions?

Noldar 12-14-2001, 12:34 PM You could try Focal Hosting (http://www.focalhosting.com/) . They offer features similar to Aletia, including Multiple Domain Hosting. I haven't used them, so I can't comment on their service, but they were quick to reply to my email inquiries.
creosote 12-14-2001, 12:48 PM One thing that looks really cool about Focal (which I've never used) is that they post notices about extended downtime in their forum..
pair.com (which I have used) also does this, and it's really reassuring to know that, when there is downtime, there's both public documentation of it, and info about how long it's expected to last..
WaldoUK 12-14-2001, 08:41 PM Thanks for the recommendations. The two I'm considering at present are Horizon Hosting (http://www.horizonhosting.co.uk) and Focal Hosting (http://www.focalhosting.com/). However, this time I'm going to consider my options much more carefully before choosing.
Thanks again :)

Seriously, how many hops between you and a potential host is too many?
(I am eight hops from horizonhosting.co.uk and ten from focalhosting, despite living pretty close (relatively) to focal hosting..)
WaldoUK 12-15-2001, 12:28 AM Well I'm 14 hops to Focal Hosting and 16 hops to Horizon. Not really sure what this means to me. I'm based in the UK, but the site (when it launches) will probably gather most visitors from the US.
After the fiasco with Aletia I'm going to be very very careful about picking my next host.
Try sectorlink - only downer is no CP at the moment (due any moment - still have e-mail CP etc) and they offer true multi domain hosting on one FTP acount - great uptime, good support and good prices.

jiminsd 12-15-2001, 12:32 PM I was just posting this on another thread... Hostgo did multi-domains on thier accounts (up to 5) for no extra charge. Unfortunately, only email on the "main domain" is operational. They don't promote this on their site but email them and they will tell you more. Great host. I moved from them because I needed the email accounts on the secondary domains. http://www.hostgo.com
