View Full Version : Kids And Web Hosting
Rewdog 12-13-2001, 09:37 AM Well this has been discussed in many threads but usually it was discussed in threads it wasn't supposed to be ;) . (IE ADEHOST PROBLEMS) So rant and rave and show your point here.
Would you buy hosting from a teenager?
As for the poll, Would you buy hosting from a kid age 13-17 assuming that the service looked great and prices looked great too?
IMO, there are many factors, but it depends on the maturity level of the kid most. There are 30 year olds that aren't as mature as some 15 year olds and vise versa.
WildWayz 12-13-2001, 10:10 AM really depends.
I wouldn't go with anyone under 17 - cos I would feel they do not have that much experience and have other commitments in life like school etc
It does make you feel more confident if they are over 20 and have been in the profession at least a year.
Exceptions tho - Kunal is 17 and he is extremely knowledgable - so I would have no problems getting hosting etc off of him.

cperciva 12-13-2001, 10:16 AM I'd want to make sure that they knew what they were doing... but I'd want the same, and ask the same questions, of anyone. I've seen more than enough incompetant adults to know that it isn't just teenagers who often lack experience.
Chicken 12-13-2001, 10:22 AM I think you are asking would people discriminate, based on age alone, and the answer would be yes. This has been discussed a few times, and people of young age tend to get offended, but bottom line is that if you were 13 and you actually stated that on your site, you'd have a tough time getting signups from 30 year olds.
Any time people are spending money, they like to think they are spending it with a reputable company, and most likely, by someone of legal age to run a business. Just like anything else, there are no solid rules. Of course a 13 year old *could* run a hosting company successfully. Signing up with an adult does not guarantee you will get better service.
i had few accounts with companies run by teens ,
i think there is nothing wrong with that ,
i get what i need , and thats it , i dont really care how old is the one who sits behind the computer in the other side .
thats just me .
Gurudev 12-13-2001, 05:43 PM It is not a question of age. A hosting business needs to be able to provide support to customers when problems arise and there are problems during all hours of the day. I don't see how a kid going to school and has other things to do can provide me support when I need it.
Generally, in my opinion it is not a good idea to host with someone who has other things going on full-time and is doing hosting part-time. There are some other businesses that can be juggled with your school schedule like web design which don't need you to be accessible all the time, but hosting is a different bird.
Sorry, I know there are a lot of kids here doing this but you want my opinion and I gave it you.
akashik 12-14-2001, 08:04 AM Just my opinion but I wouldn't host with anyone who couldn't be tried in a court of law. You might never need that kind of recourse, but I generally find that as an adult you usually feel more obliged to follow the letter of law when you know it'll come down on you like a ton of bricks if you break it.
I know I sound like a broken record on this subject, but hosting someone's business does have a level of responsibility that I often think isn't fully appreciated by a lot of people (and that goes from small, single guy hosts right up to the big ones)

My thoughts exactly. :)
Alan - Vox 12-14-2001, 09:47 AM I know were not meant to discuss our own companies in the forums, but are there people here who would avoid Splash Host because im 17? I dont goto school or uni, i do this full time and im sure i could be sued just like anyone else.
MarcD 12-14-2001, 09:02 PM No for many reasons
one major reason they are not of age. to be responsible for there actions at least in my state.
if something happens i cant do anything unless i go after there parents.
also if they are that young they should be in school right ?
so there would be time commitments that couldnt be met
Is just my views =)
