I'm currently hosting a site with Averdata, and in the past 3 months or so, they have upgraded to new servers twice. What I find odd, though, is that rather than transferring our files over to the new servers, both times they've asked us to do it ourselves. With other hosts in the past, if they upgraded or had to use different servers they would inform us of the switch and do it themselves. I was just curious if it was common for hosts to require clients to move the files over themselves...requires some effort on my part, as I have to now deal with a new password and ftp address, and actually take the time to do it myself. My fault, I guess, for going with such a low-budget host...

Any decent host, would transfer your files for you, considering they are not resellers and have access to your files.....

Maybe think about a new host.. One thats a little bit more stable...

I know each time we have moved, I moved everyone's files for them. That is a huge pain to do also. Also what we did was leave the old servers operational for a while so people get get updated files. From the time we backup everyones files, move them over, get them setup on the new machine and take it all live....some files such as forum databases have already changed quite a bit. So we left the old machines up so that they could get their most updated files and move those over themselves. But yeah, the host should initially do the major part of it..

Let's see... two dollars and fifty cents a month for "unlimited data transfer, unlimited POP email," etc., etc., etc.

I can't figure out why they don't provide better customer service. What a shocker.

 $2.50 monthly?

Ok my jaw just dropped...let me pick it up off the floor.

Most hosts would do this for you. However, depending on the price you're paying, some hosts (the low cost ones) may leave you on your own. :unhappy:

Hey, in this economy, $2.50 should buy a small townhouse, right?

Err..... At least that's what my broker told me....

He said you are entitled to Something for Nothing...

pfftt you need a new broker... from what I've been hearing you can get twice the amount of something for nothing PLUS the townhouse!! To top it off the competition has gotten so thick they're actually cutting the cost of nothing to..errrr...ummm ... I think it's time for me to sleep now :)

-- rivka for $2.50 / monthly..I'm surprised they are upgrading anything.... so all in all it's a good deal. Think of it as the difference between self serve and full service at the gas station (if you can remember way back when they actually offered full service ;) and note that if you do require full service the cost will go up...

To be honest, for $2.50 a month, you should be happy they're even still around. Let's just say that many hosts trying to offer hosting at that price end up going out of business rather more quickly than expected. :o

Not sure I'd trust a low cost host to do it properly :(

I had one host move stuff from one server to another (different NOCs) expecting all the MySQL stuff to carry on working

The fact that I'd already done it properly and they trashed my working website didn't exactly help

That's true, for the price I'm paying I shouldn't be expecting much, LOL. I guess I was just surprised, since every other host (even the other budget ones) would do the transferring...
