my RAq at rackshack isnt showing the exact time..i fix it and 2-3 days later it is few hours up or down ? What can cause this problem?

The battery in the cobalt could be dead. All you need to do is put
a time server into the raq. You can put time servers in in the cobalt gui. :cool:

hm isnt runing an NTP server a possible security issue..and if that baterry is dead isnt rakshack suppose to change it?

most definately if the battery is dead rackshack should change it. hit up their IRC support or put in a ticket.


i think the ntp server is a sercurity risk, but, other than that, does anyone know a free ntp server?

There was a security exploit (buffer overflow) in an older version of ntp. I believe versions after 4.0.99m have been fixed. I know the most recent version has been fixed, that's the one I run.

You can also configure ntp, via /etc/ntp.conf to reject all outside queries. The online docs are cryptic, yet helpful for this task.

You have to be careful if you use ntpdate exclusively because it steps the clock. If you step the clock backwards, you can set off watchdog timers. This may not be a good thing. ntp slews the the clock to get around this problem.
