RotoHost 12-12-2001, 04:41 PM it all depends on how fast your ISP refreshes their DNS. I've seen it as fast as 8 hours....and as long as 48 hours. If you give us the domain name, we could check to see if it resolves here. Walter 12-12-2001, 05:18 PM Anywhere from 12 to 72 hours. AH-Tina 12-12-2001, 05:21 PM In the case of some ISPs, I've seen DNS take up to a WEEK to update. @home is/was notoriously slow to update. --Tina Angel78 12-12-2001, 06:20 PM and how long does it take for ns1 & ns2 (when trying to run my own nameservers) to start working? If you check the WHOIS record for the domain name just before and just after changing DNS information, you'll see the change happens in real time. After that, it's up to the ISPs. elsmore1 12-12-2001, 07:39 PM If you are creating nameservers to use, it usually takes a minimum of 24 hours, and often up to 72 hours for them to be registered with the root nameservers. (for .com/.net/org) It may take some time after that for other registrars to pick up the new nameservers, but once they are in the root, you are pretty well good to go. You can check the whois at http://www.nsiregistry.com/cgi-bin/whois (specify nameserver as the record type), for the existence of your nameserver records in the root database. thewitt 12-12-2001, 08:17 PM Originally posted by Intelligent Hosting OpenSRS updates instantly. That's only in the OpenSRS whois server... DNS changes replicate across the Internet at different rates depending on the configuration of each individual DNS server. Most will now update within 24 hours. Some take weeks. The last time I moved a website, I had hits on the old IP address up to 21 days after I changed the DNS... -t Jag 12-12-2001, 11:47 PM Originally posted by Angel78 and how long does it take for ns1 & ns2 (when trying to run my own nameservers) to start working? Name servers take about the same time as domains when being updated or created. It all depends on teh registrar and with so many out there today its hard to pinpoint a time frame. I would say 24-72 hrs is about the average to get name servers registered/created. Of course then you have to update your domain with those new name servers and wait another 24-72hrs. netsolutions 12-13-2001, 05:44 AM That's one thing you have to say about Network Solutions. They are the fastest with that stuff. I've never waited more then 12 hours. Otherwise, answers are going to mostly speculation or educated guesses. |
