I am quite surprised to see no Rotarians here. :(
I was thinking I could ask them what they do in their clubs.
RDX1 are you a rotarian ?

I was invited a year or so ago to join, but didn't quite found the chance to go along with the whole process.

I attented a few of their meetings and I must say there are quite some nice achievements...

On the other hand, a rotary club member will always be proud and "show-off" he's a member.

Now a member of the free masonry on the other hand......

I was just recently invited, but one obligation of our local group is mandatory weekly meetings. I can't possibly be there every week, so I will be declining the nomination. They do some marvellous things, though.

I feel these weekly meetings are a welcome break.
Also, you can always makeup by going to other rotary clubs if you miss a meeting.
This way you get to meet other people too...

No, I am not a member. I had to search for what it was, but I still do not understand. It is a club where businesses do good deeds?

yes RDX1, you got the main picture. Also, the weekly meetings are a great way to some business of your own, meet quite a few people with some real power in various industries...

It is a group of professionals/businessmen who form a club.
Rotary helps you make friends from different professions. My club for example has hospital owners, doctors, lawyers, electrical contractors etc.. We can help each other.

All clubs meet once a meet besides the others activities they do together.

Also, as a group, one can do a lot of community service.
Rotary has done some of the best things to the global community. Polio Plus is one such project.

Another benefit is, when you go to a different place you can go and attend any rotary meeting in that area. So it helps you make friends in new places too...

Only 1.2 million? There's 6 billion + people in the world ...

Hi!
I am from India...
My father has been a Rotarian for many years.
In the beginning I was totally against Rotary and felt it was just a place where guys meet and drink.

But then sometime back me and my wife joint Rotary as well...
In the beginning I thought it was all about getting more customers. But with my kind of work, I could get no customers here anyway, neither did I join it expecting any.

I made a lot of friends. I learnt a lot about other industries and realized how good our industry is. We always sit in A/C rooms and an angry customers means a mail in BOLD letters.

Unlike doctors for whom , one mistake could mean life or death. Or for that matter almost all professions have their own pros and cons.

Another aspect we learnt from rotary was the ideal of "service above self". This really changed our lives and now we see the world in a much better way. We realize that there are so many people all around the world including the US who are Poor. They need help and more important they need love. Organizations like Rotary do a lot there.

I feel all of us must spend some time in such activities.
Besides all the serious stuff. There is a lot of fun too... :)

Ok then, I have a pretty fair idea about how this works, as I've been invited a while ago to join, but since then no move on their behalf...

How does one join if they want to? What are the requirements, etc?

I guess it is one of the largest organizations in the world (second to the Lions club in terms of size).
It is the oldest social organizations.
Most of the charter members of the UN when it was formed were Rotarians....
And just the 1.2 million had the power to eradicate Polio from the face of this planet... :-)

Generally a member of a club recommends your name to their club. If all the other members like the idea they invite you to join. They would most probably call you for some talk about your profession or your hobby/intersts before that to make sure that you are the kind of person who'll blend into their club.

They will also generally call for some club parties where you go with the family.
The spouse in called a Rotary Ann. Rotary also has a club called Innner wheel for ladies.
The kids of Rotarians are called Annets.

If they feel the family is good then you are in.
They would have the presidents installation. This generally takes place in June / July. That day they take induct the new members too.

Once you are member you get your rotary badge. You can wear it and just walk into any rotary club meeting anywhere in the world. You are always welcome by the clubs... :-)

Is there such a club for artists, arctors and such? BESIDES scientology!

j/k

But yah. Know of any like that?

According to From Hell, Jack the Ripper was a Mason.

We've got a masonic temple here in my town. I haven't heard of any sacrificial rites being performed, but then again, the place doesn't really have windows.

LOL

I'm a member of a few organizations -- and was invited to join the IEEE (yes, you read that right).

I have never known what the Rotary club was all about. Now I know :)

Hi!
Here is a good solution for many. Rotary now has some eClubs too. So you meet virtually...
Here is one example.
http://www.rotaryeclub5510.org/index.asp

Actually, a client/mentor/provider/friend of mine is a member of this club and he introduced told me about his eClub. :-)

I was a member of a Rotract club in Bangalore. I think it was meant for youth or beginners but it never took off because most of its members were kids of rich businessmen who were too lazy to even attend the regular meetings.

The same goes for LION's club as well I guess :)

I'm looking for a club that will help maximize my social network, provide assured job leads, and provide a platform for potential world domination. All these clubs seem too preoccupied with helping people and community service.

Any members of Skull and Bones?

About the masons, http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?threadid=264379&highlight=mason

Skip the incredibly wrong posts of nozol and get to around the 2nd-3rd pages.

I have seen some good rotracts. But they generally have a problem as they are all kids of Rich people so they really have no ideas on what to do.

They generally make a good party crowd only. Rotract members are between 18 and 30 years.
