I'm looking for a good quality yet affordable 1 U rackable server. It should have a reasonable HD (20 gigabytes or more), 2x Ethernet, VGA, ps/2. My budget for this is $300-$1000.

No Cobalt boxes or "do it yourself" kits please.

This is not a request, rather I'm looking for recommendations. I've looked at Siemens thus far, but they look somewhat expensive. Sun is also out of the question as I need to run SuSE Linux, and don't want Solaris or any other OS.

Thanks in advance. :)

you can get a custom box. build it yourself through http://www.pricewatch.com/ and http://www.ebay.com/

or you can contact someone at http://www.scantec.net/ for a quote on a custom-built server with warranty.

I forgot to mention: the server will be based in Germany, Europe. Therefore, the company we're buying it from would have to be able to either ship there easily, or be based in Europe.

hmm. well. so much for the ebay and pricewatch route.

that company, scantec, is a mid-sized VAR in charlotte, nc. they can ship basically anywhere(and has in the past. europe, south america, bahamas, etc).

but yeah. pricing it out local might be better because of the customs and so forth. vienna's customs are the worst.

Doesn't SuSE 7.3 support Sparc? In fact, don't they have an ISO you can download (unlike Intel/i386)? I've never tried it myself, but that's one reason why I have SuSE in my head -- Sparc Support. I could be wrong...

If not, try www.qsol.com. They have nice 1U servers for under $1k and might be able to ship to Germany.

I think it would be easier to just run the standard version of SuSE. Further, Sun servers tend to be quite (VERY) expensive. :D

PogoLinux (http://www.pogolinux.com/) has a 1 GHz PIII server with a 40 GB drive and 256 MB RAM for just under $1k...

I've purchased about three or four from them and I setup one that Darren Herman bought. I also built one myself and just picked up a nice case from them (w/ 7 fans) -- All the machines are 1U's and have had no faults. Well, actually one had a drive die but it was an IBM 75Gxp drive which we all know were faulty.

On the other hand, they are local to me so I just show up order and pick it up that day or the next day. ;-)

We had to drop racksaver after receiving at least one faulty part in the last 5 servers we got from them. That was some time back though, around June. 5 straight servers all with something wrong before we could even begin to use them just really truned us off.

Problem with qsol is the shipping. Shipping a server to europe costs approx. $125 a server.
10% shipping costs is pretty much in my opinion.

What i would suggest, call some local big computer stores and ask them if they can build one for you. May be lot cheaper.
