View Full Version : domain transfer problem with myDiscountDomains.com
My current registry denied my domain transfer request. After reviewed their TOS, I found the following terms:
*********************************************
c. If the domain name is eligible for transfer, the registrant of the domain name must provide us with the following:
1. The domain name to be transferred, correctly spelled.
2. Your myDiscountDomains.com user name.
3. The last 4 numbers of the credit card you used to register the domain name, or a
valid picture ID.
4. A letter of intent to transfer the domain name naming the ICANN registrar you wish
to transfer
your domain
name to (SIGNED AND NOTARIZED) .
5. Processing fee will be no more than $15.00 per domain in the form of a money order
or cashiers check, made
payable to myDiscountDomains.com.
All of the above information and documents must be sent to:
*************************************
Does that mean I have to pay them $15 to transfer my domain to another registry?
I do feel angry with their terms, I should have read them more carefully.
Any suggestion would be appreicated.
eSology 06-19-2004, 09:14 AM What you have experienced is something called "holding a domain hostage." Your ransom sounds to be in the form of a great hassle and $15. Count yourself lucky though because some people can never get their domain transferred.
fattee77 06-19-2004, 09:51 AM They resell for itsyourdomain.com. All of their resellers conduct such practices.
Bashar 06-20-2004, 02:57 AM the problem itsyourdomain are supporting their resellers and saying to end users whatever the reseller's TOS says you have to obey them.
pay it and transfer away, some registrars like totalnic will NEVER let your domain go
netgogo 06-20-2004, 09:22 AM mydiscountdomains=itsyourdomain
I managed to get a domain away from theses crooks.
You will have to fight it seriously if you want to transfer away from them as they will do everything they can to prevent transfer (delay tactics, bad faith, ToS )
My advise: deal directly with itsyourdomain and cc to mydiscountdomain as they will otherwise push the "potato" to each other (aka not do anything).
If they don't react, set a deadline and *warn* them (no threats) that you will then have to contact icann and their local authorities (police, sheriff etc in Illinois and California). Once deadline passes, send letter to icann with cc to both crooks...
I did so, then the bastards from mydiscountdomains told me I "was an ill person" (haha you bet) and the "boss" from itsyourdomain all of a sudden overulled the negative decision... I didn't expect it to work, but it did :) So got to be ill person :)
You will need to mention that the TOS of mydiscountdomains have changed since your original registration (send url link to them and cc copy to icann, so to keep pressure)...
If necessary be prepared to send real certified mail to their local police departments.
some usefull stuff:
archives.org (to get the TOS back in 2003... before the notarized crap they ask now)
internic.net (for cc to icann... btw they don't move...)
There is a website explaining an alternative procedure
(I found it on this forum, but I don't remember the url):
The idea is : renew your domain with itsyourdomain (nor the reseller!) via their (shared) control panel... (yep try it, same login/pass will work...). Copy billing data you will find there (for evidence they are both playing hand in hand)... and renew the domain (15$).
Now, you are no longer officially dealing with the reseller and the frivolious TOS but with an icann accredited registrar... This "should" allow you to transfer your domain... Of course mydiscountdomain will bark...
Personnaly, if your domain is not close to expiration date (I needed over 1 month fight), try first idea. Crooks don't need to stay in business and don't deserve extra money.
Check google, you might get useful leads.
Good luck.

very bold and untrue statement

Well maybe not all of them, but at least domainsnext.com, mydiscountdomains.com wich are both resellers of of itsyourdomain.com
dmaven 06-20-2004, 08:43 PM I do not think it is itsyourdomain policy to block transfers. It could be just one or two rogue resellers
At first, I tried to contact mydiscountdomain, but nobody replied, then I sent an email to itsyourdomain, they just kicked the ball back to mydiscountsdomain, saying that I would have to obey the reseller's TOS.
dmaven 06-21-2004, 12:13 AM You always have icann as a last recourse
netgogo 06-22-2004, 07:50 AM I am absolutely convinced that it is itsyourdomain's policy to "hide" behind its resellers. From the communication I got from them and the email headers, they are working hand in hand. They are exploiting a loophole : only icann accredited registrar are accountable to icann... not resellers (!)... so they push the ball as much as they can... classical delaying tactics. They even pretend to consult their "legal" department for that matter... The thing is to "deal" immediately with itsyourdomain, not accept that the reseller is responsible - and cc to icann/internic.
Avoid itsyourdomain and their resellers they are crooks, there are tons of other registars.
netgogo, thanks for sharing the info. I'm having problem transferring my domain out of mydiscountdomains.com. It's impossible to contact them -- they don't answer both phone and email. Can't even left them a voicemail -- mailbox is full.
Did you send email or letter (snail mail) to the 2 crooks? ICANN?
creativearc 07-15-2004, 01:09 AM Not like MyDiscountDomains needs more dirt, but look at this message I got after having NO response whatsoever to my registrar transfer request. (I guess its an acknowledgment that my emails were received?
The customer has sent over 20 emails for technical support. As you know,
we are not Microsoft and he is trying to do something he is incapable of
doing. It seems to me he has no idea about how to utilize the mx record or
any other functions, and he calls himself a web developer. We only make
less than 25 cents per domain name, and we are not willing to create an
Internet school especially for him. It seems to me he is the type of person
that is not above board by his mentioning in his email that he has
complained to ICANN and Internic, which really does not bother me since we
are not doing anything wrong. We are spending more time helping him than he
deserves. So please approve the transfer for the domain names
creativearc.com and any other domain he has in his account. I already
manually authenticated his ownership of the domain names.

Hopefully they will allow a transfer because the whois still reflects:

just wait and hopefully this problem will be solved pretty soon.

but if you read into it on formGR it states this...
Once you have entered into the Agreement, the transfer will take place within five (5) calendar days unless the current registrar of record denies the request.
doesnt this leave open the option of it not being granted? maybe I am reading it wrong?
pinecamguy 08-03-2004, 01:13 PM I have also been caught in this "web" of paperwork by MyDiscountDomains, in trying to transfer several domain names (after the way I have been treated, I plan to transfer ALL my domain names from MyDiscountDomains).
This is a warning for anyone considering using MyDiscountDomains: while it may be cheap and easy to register or move a domain to them, you will be in domain transfer hell trying to get out from under them.
$8.88 for a domain but they want $15 to transfer and a signed, notarized letter and a postal money order or cashier's check to accomplish a transfer.
I am the Senior News Editor for a nationwide Internet news service, but I feel I am too close to this to write a story at this point. If any other reporter reads this, feel free to contact me.
In the meantime, I plan to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau that handles Laguna Beach (where they are located) and also submit this to the local TV station's "Call For Help" to see what they can do.
The thing that really upsets me is mydiscountdomains has the gaul to warn customers about other companies that will not let them transfer domain names -- when they do the very same thing themselves.
Don't use mydiscountdomains! Avoid them like the plague!
creativearc 08-03-2004, 01:18 PM FYI, as mentioned in an earlier thread, I brought up the fact that the terms of service had changed, using the original content found at archive.org.
Worked for me - no $15 fee!
Paul
pinecamguy 08-03-2004, 01:59 PM I called their phone number and the guy seemed very willing to work with me on this problem. I will keep you posted.
creativearc 08-03-2004, 02:48 PM They actually answered the phone listed on their Web Site?
I wonder if disgruntled customers caused the dramatic shift?
pinecamguy 08-03-2004, 03:34 PM Yes, they answered the phone and actually indicated a willingness to work with me on my problem... said they would waive the fee and then asked why I was transfering and when I explained what I was disastified with, they indicated they will work on a solution.
I was steaming mad when I called and talked to the guy for about 20 mins and he calmed me down. I will wait to see if they follow through.
dmaven 08-03-2004, 03:54 PM Are these guys affiliated with itsyourdomain?
creativearc 08-03-2004, 04:02 PM You betcha! I think mydiscountdomains is a reseller for itsyourdomain.
Bashar 08-03-2004, 06:23 PM yes they are
dmaven 08-04-2004, 12:01 AM Thought so, time to start running away. IYD sucks
insomnia2oo1 09-24-2008, 10:26 AM After multiple emails to MYDISCOUNTDOMAINS.COM,in attempting to transfer my domain, I finally receive a reply email, that I felt needed to be shared with the rest of the internet community.
See Below:
We have no explanation for why your domain name was not transferred, and if you continue sending 40 emails at a time, we will consider you as a spammer.
We are 100% compliant with ICANN’s transfer procedure, while Godaddy does not allow its customers to transfer their domain names to us or to any other registrar by intentionally changing the whois email address to a different email address and all different illegal procedures to stop anyone from transferring to us, our transfer process is automated, and we do not approve or disapprove domain transfer. Don’t forget that your domain name that you wish to transfer represents less than $.50 per year to us, and we have no interest of spending hours responding to customer’s complaints regarding transfer failures. We advise you to go back to Godaddy and ask them specifically what caused your domain name transfer to fail. They should have advised you to remove the transfer shield in order for the domain name to be transferred and it is not our obligation to advise you of this. It is the responsibility of the gaining registrar.
