Hi guys,

Well my friend didn't ask me to post this, I'm just being considerate. :D
He just moved a few miles, to a new house, and when he went to start his computer, it went to the starting windows 98 screen, but it stays like that, and it won't load all the way, ya know to the main desktop! Does anyone know why? He's left it on for hours and hours, it just won't load Windows 98. :(

Could it be loose connections or some crap like that?

Thanks,

- ShawnŽ

hit the esc key when that comes up.. that should show you whats loading and where its getting stuck...

or try booting into safe mode by hitting f8...

Hi, just as another suggestion, to add to kunal's suggestion.

If the safe mode works then its probably a driver issue, make sure nothing was recently installed and that in Control Panel>System nothing is reporting a huge compatibility error.

If it doesnt boot into safe mode then you have a huge problem, you can try the same as kunal suggested except choosing, the option to log the boot to a bootlog.

Once the bootlog has been written you can boot into "command prompt" only and type "edit c:\bootlog.txt"

this will show you a list of all devices that have failed and succeeded during boot, although this can be a little complicated it is usually the only last method short of a rebuild.

you could also try running a scandisk from the command prompt to ensure the disk hasnt become corrupt.

There are bucket loads of other things but i think thats enough to try for now.

if none of the above works then do a reinstall to the same directory as it is already installed to, the main system settings will be kept and the core windows files will be replaced from the CD, lthough this can be very dangerous if you have service packed your machine.

sorry for the complex answer but sometimes a dead windows box is a nightmare, usually dealt with by a rebuild :(

Thanks so much kunal and xtstrike for your responses. ;) :)

I will tell my friend your suggestions, and then see what happens. He did say that his keyboard isn't working, but I think he was joking. ;)

Thanks again!

*LOL!* :D

Well to tell you the truth, he isn't smart in computers at all - he's a good example of the typical 13 year old teenager, who uses the PC for chatting, and Mp3s. ;) *hehe*
Hey, could that may be the problem? Well, I'll ask him if they're plugged into the correct slot. *lol*
