View Full Version : running two control panels?
Flumps 06-18-2004, 10:39 AM would it be possible to run two control panels at the same time? e.g. DA and webmin?
I wanted to install webmin but leave DA installed aswell would this be possible on a dedicated box?
tazd9t9 06-18-2004, 11:14 AM ive never tried but im sure you would end up with some conflicts somewhere along the line.
darkpunk99 06-18-2004, 11:32 AM DA and webmin shouldn't have any problems together. I've had webmin and cPanel together -- webmin focuses on the server's backend, while cPanel is for the clients.
blockcipher 06-18-2004, 11:33 AM They probably edit files differently, so they might fight over eachother like tazd9t9 said. If its a mission critical box I wouldn't try it :)
You can setup a test box and go from there though.
I have never done it so I can't give you a solid answer, I'm just assuming they will conflict.
Flumps 06-18-2004, 12:42 PM yeah i think they wuld conflict too :-s im not gunna try it then if no one can give me a decent answer :P
namelayer 06-18-2004, 12:51 PM Ill go try it right now.
blockcipher 06-18-2004, 12:52 PM Let us know how it goes ;)
I've tried DA and C-Panel on a server just for a laugh...Oh dear is all I can say. The second you change one of them the other breaks

namelayer 06-18-2004, 01:14 PM Installed Webmin RPM - OK
Was able to login as usual with root pass - OK
Logged into DA - OK
Installed Usermin through Webmin - OK
Tested out installing perl modules (DBI DBD::mysql) in Webmin - OK
DA User account found newly installed perl modules - OK
Created new user and admin through DA - OK
Created user through Webmin - OK
Loads look good
[root@box1 root]# uptime
12:57:33 up 1 day, 13:04, 1 user, load average: 0.01, 0.10, 0.07
Installed module Disk Quotas through Webmin - OK
Webmin seeing users created through DA- FAIL
DA seeing users created with Webmin - Fail as they both use a different process to create a user in differnt directories. All normal.
All services still running as seen through DA - OK
Both CP's find the same httpd.conf and are able to edit successfully.
Able to add apache modules successfully.
Domains on box still resolve and load fast.
DA still running fast and Webmin slow as usual (BIG images I guess)
This was tested on a TEST server of mine located in sagonet DC on a Redhat 9 OS P4 2.4 1 gig ram 2 120 gig HD's
If you feel sure you want to attempt this I take no resposibilty if you bork you box. :)
nexcess.net 06-18-2004, 02:29 PM Beyond editing config files differently (or assuming different paths to config files) many panels assume a single type of MTA (sendmail, qmail etc) which which cause at least mail not to work. The web backend may be better since Apache is the 'standard'. FTP servers may differ as well along with most other basic services (dns, etc).

Flumps 06-18-2004, 05:02 PM i think ill just wait then till i get a little bit more money to buy another box to play with then :P
Kanagaraj 06-20-2004, 02:10 PM any one try to plesk and other control panels in one server?
Bashar 06-20-2004, 05:32 PM some control panels are possible others aren't
webmin+da webmin+cpanel i think wont have issues, but plesk or ensim with any others will have issues for sure since they use some sort of virtual environment.
just out of curiosity why you want todo this ? :D
AcuNett 06-20-2004, 05:44 PM Webmin won't break anything, it's not a hosting panel its more of a utility to help you edit and configure system files.
Flumps 06-20-2004, 05:45 PM I just wanted to have a play around with it, get a feel for it etc. but if it aint possible then dont worry about it. no biggie. just thought id ask thats all.
Flumps 06-23-2004, 07:35 AM yey i installed webmin :D got two control panels installed now hehe, just getting used to using webmin and playing around with it then ill uninstall it :P
Bashar 06-23-2004, 07:38 AM webmin and what ? :D
Pheaton 06-23-2004, 07:46 AM Good luck uninstalling it. :)
I don't know about webmin, but most control panels are meant to be installed, not uninstalled. ;)
Bashar 06-23-2004, 07:48 AM webmin doesn't really modify any box settings, its mainly controls the current installed/default stuff in their current locations :)
Flumps 06-23-2004, 11:19 AM ive got webmin and direct admin. i wanted to install webmin to get used to its functions and things before i buy another box to install it on seperatly to use as a games box.
