Its a good idea to register your business as a sole trader, partnership, private limited company or public limited company. When ever you start trading start keeping books, recipts, invoices etc. or you might have some trouble with the tax man. You dont have to register to pay VAT unless your turnover is over something like £56,000 per anum. When we started up we got lots of sound information from Scottish Enterprise. Even if your not based in scotland, most of the information is relevant all over the UK. Theres lots of information on their website, and they have a pretty neat factsheet on forming a business at http://www.scottish-enterprise.com/publications/02formng.pdf

Setting up a business banking current account is also a good idea. You might run into credit trouble if you start trading through a personal account.

I recommend using www.uk-plc.net to register your company. Also you might want to make a AUP/TOS document for your company which you will probably need to get a soliciter to look over.

If you need more info then feel free to e-mail me.
