In response to their power outage a few days ago they are doing maintenance that will take some servers offline for a few hours. It doesn't bother me some servers will be down for three hours, but rather they intend to just turn off the power and it is the user's responsibility to shut down their own server beforehand. That just blows my mind that they can expect all of these users to do that, let alone would even consider purposefully just cutting power to any servers in their datacenter. :-\

Didnt EV1 have a big power problem when they were RackShack? I might be wrong but I thought they ran out of power last year and had to stop taking orders for a while until they figured it out. Seems odd they would be having another power issue so soon.

Well, I guess they would do a main power shutdown rather than to go to each and every single machine and do a proper shutdown which would take time.
Shutting down the machine individually would ensure that no data are lost and the machine properly handled.
I am not with EV1 but from what I understand they have tens of thousands of machine in their care and I am not sure how many of those thousands are affected, shutting each machine individual by their tech might delay the power upgrade by several days and that could cause some to be off-line longer than others. Having the owners do it would ensure a speedier results. At least that's what I think. Of course if you do not intend to do a power shutdown yourself then if something goes wrong, you cannot put them at blame. If however the issue is going to affect a small handful of users, 5 or 10 servers then I believe they can be able to handle it on their own.

The post says its about 600 servers that would be affected. And I agree with the original poster that it is not a good idea to just go pulling the plug on 600 servers. I have a server that was affected by the recent outage and I had alot of corrupt files/binaries to fix. I do not look forward to doing it again.

Probably not a good idea, but what are they going to do? Do they even keep root passwords on hand for all those machines? How long would it take the techs to shut them all down manually? Doesn't seem like they have much choice.

Been with EV1 for over 2 years, besides this last glitch that hit one of our servers. We have had no power issues, and I know of no power issues. There are search engines on these forums, ev1 and in general - before you post a rumor bashing a company, why not check first?
But I guess with all the spamming you do, you don't have time to check facts before you bash the competition.

I got 1 servers affected for around 1 hours on the outage.. Not to bad since this was the first outage in 2 years then i got a prompt reply on my ticket about my reboot ticket.
Not sure if i will have a server affected by the upcoming maintenance btw... if they just can do it on week-end this would be great to limit customer cry..:)

Complete explanations abound in our forum. We were able to limit the time associated with the maintenance window by delaying the window three days so that we could identify and contact the affected customers. If we did the shutdowns ourselves, we would have had to add about 3 hours to the window. Rather, we chose notification to clients to allow then to gracefully shut down their systems.
We have emailed all of the customers and will be sending a second notification email this morning. Bounced emails (as in they have given us bad contact information) will have a trouble ticket posted. In addition, we have made at least one notification call to the contact number provided by every customer affected.
We chose the shortest possible window, to reduce customer impact.
It was a hard decision, but the right decision.
