Hi all,

I just got a request from a host I was "working" for (free hosting, I look after his clients requests etc) to post a "what do you think of XYZ hosting?" on these forums. XYZ being his company.

I won't say who the company is (because it would just look like I was bashing them then) but would like to know what you people think of this sort of request? Is it worth loosing a hosting account over it? (as I just did?) Is it common? Have you been asked to do it? Would you do it?

Thanks,
Douglas

1) What you people think of this sort of request? I think it speaks for itself.

2) Is it worth loosing a hosting account over it? To me? Yes.

3) (as I just did?) That's sad.

4) Is it common? I don't think it's "common."

5) Have you been asked to do it? No

6) Would you do it? No

I'm sure that people do this and that it is probably somewhat common. However, I certainly would not expect anyone who does this to answer this question honestly.

Hi kmh, welcome to the forums ;)

I wanted to post something about it just to get it off my chest, but it doesn't really help if I can't say who it was though...

******** like that just get at me

They are what damage peoples impressions of the hosting industry...people who's first post is "This company looks good! Come and have a look!"

It's the same as when a random user shows up and their very first post is something along the lines of, "Wow! I just found GreatHost.com. They're the best. Y'all just have to check it out."

The problem is that I'm sure there are honest people who really do go to the trouble to register for the purpose of spreading good news. But, we all know that enough people do this for all the wrong reasons, and the cycicism becomes contagious.

No. Thou shall not post fake threads to promote your webhosting
company. And let the chicken come down on those who do. :D

Why not post their name? It was wrong for them to ask you to do that and I think you should let people know that they are dishonest.

p.s. So Doug, are you still working for http://Horizonhosting.co.uk? I know a few days ago you were helping them with support in exchange for free hosting... :dgrin:

Heck, I've been asked to just blatantly advertise a host (couple years ago, nothing recent) before. Me being an idiot then, went with it falling for the 'ol "it'll be alright" thing. :| I should have listened to my gut on that one. Asking someone to post a honest review on the user's true feelings of a host may not be bad, but having them post no info and possibly even a lie just for traffic reasons is dishonest and frankly should get the host thrown to the depths of hades.

I think the request sucks.

You lost a hosting account, but you kept your integrity. Which is worth more to you? (rhetorical, your admirable actions have answered the question already.)

There are many tests of your integrity as you go through life.

I would not do it, and I would be happy that I found out the true cost of the hosting account I was given.

I think it's a bad idea as it always looks transparent. Of all the times I've seen that 'type' of post on this forum I'm pretty sure I'm able to spot 80% of the time which one's are just self promoters. They have a certain 'feel' to them...

Why not just ask the host to post in the offers forum??

Im pretty sure anyone who makes a good offer there almost always gets a few people to at least try it out.
