It was a few years later after the site, already with thousands of members and the biggest hosting forum on the web, had been sold to headsurfer at EV1 that advertising began to play a role.

iNet have only recently taken over, the question was about when the site was started.

It shows up on archive.org all the way back to July 6th, 2000. It probably was around even longer than that.

My userid is 316, and I signed up five months later in August 2000. User 1316, a thousand new members later, took just over four months -- joined in December. The next 1000 took three months; user 2316 signed on in March of 2001. So after a year there were about 2500 signups... and no advertising yet.

Its interesting this guy would be up a subject on this.
