2Grumpy 12-09-2001, 10:46 PM Nice deal, one suggestion however, more RAM please. Considering what it costs nowadays surely you could pop another 256 in there? :)
If I didn't already have 1 more server than I really need I'd be very seriously looking at one of these, hate to have all my eggs in the Rackshack basket!

Is it correct to say that the 24/7 support is not available for free?
a good price for the server, but does it reflect reliability?
Bogdan 12-10-2001, 02:55 AM Where is that price coming from?
Does anyone actually know any tech's that get paid so much?

I charge $80 an hour to "big businesses" and $15 an hour to "little guys like me".
Sure it's a double standard, but we small fries gotta stick together!
MotleyFool 12-10-2001, 08:32 AM Sweet Deal!
But atleast 512mb would be nice.. what about back ups and what software comes preinstalled?
Thx
Balaji
WildWayz 12-10-2001, 08:42 AM Forgive me for saying this - is this Cogent bandwidth?
If so, I take it the server is in the Atlanta NOC?
That would explain why it is $175/h - it is the NOC technician fees - ie making them get off their arses and do some work :)
Reboots will be free tho

coloman 12-10-2001, 08:48 AM Linux7.2 and the standard binaires that come on that load. $75 to go to 512. Yo can always add more memory if you need it later. We charge the going rate of 175 for techs and no they don't get paid that much - but this offer does not include a pre paid amount of money each month either to support me paying them their base salary. It means that I will take the risk on their payroll andif you use them you pay hte oging rate - If a group wants to get together and guarantee their payroll and overhead in a prorated monthly fee each month - I would be happy to do that - but I suspect you guys would be objectionable to paying a fixed fee fro something you may or may not use. Oh well.
these are brand new servers - they should be fine.
back ups are not included - they are priced based on frequency and the media you want used. Or you can simply tar your own files out to a home drive.
NORRITT 12-10-2001, 11:53 AM is that cogent bandwidth?
where are the server located (state)?
coloman 12-10-2001, 12:11 PM cogent and abovenet are currently in - that can change from ttime to time based on the best deals we get on backbone.
WildWayz 12-10-2001, 02:03 PM BTW - there is NOTHING wrong with Cogent - I have a server @ the Atlanta center and it rox :D

If he decides to charge 500.00 an hour that's his price .. i think it's very unprofessional to contest that ..
zagadka 12-10-2001, 06:23 PM just send you pm
Tetraboy 12-10-2001, 06:37 PM I think Jkehe stated it best...
:
Q:What is the "Atlanta NOC" referenced in the post?
A: There is no "Atlanta NOC" as you put it. This is a common misconception - "NOC" is not synonymous with "data center." Our NOC is in Anderson, SC. Our data center is located in a carrier-neutral facility in Atlanta, Georgia.

I understand that anyone can charge whatever price they would like. For me $175/hr. sounds ridiculous. I'm not trying to compete with Jeff in any way. I'm pretty sure he knows his stuff.
Just curious. :cartman:
Gurudev 12-10-2001, 10:02 PM $175/hr.
Yes, that is very reasonable if he also has a law degree.
coloman 12-11-2001, 02:57 PM We can lower that if everyone wants to commit to a minimum number of hours per month package of support in a use it or lose it - that way we can smooth the cost in relation to the reveue stream associated with having people on staff just in case someone decides to call and need help "NOW". It is an emergency at that point and as such gets charged higher for us to have people there.
Does everyone understand this??
coloman 12-15-2001, 12:07 PM I have 10 of these left before we need to order more.
