How does a program like VisualRoute look up geographical data on a particular network node? For example, how would I know where this node is located geographically:
0.so-3-0-0.XL1.ATL5.ALTER.NET

Actually I can look at that and see the "ATL" part and know it's Atlanta, but is there a universal database for this type of stuff?

After investigating my copy of VisualRoute, it looks like it's got its own internal database with the geo data, but is there anywhere to look this up on the 'net?

there are 2 freebe software packages out there that can give you the geo-target of an IP address. try looking up the internet mapping project. that should give you head-up where to find the software.

Some people are also kind enough to configure DNS LOC fields for their hosts.
