View Full Version : question about dedicated servers
I see servers on ev1servers.net for 99 dollars. What I am wondering is with this package (it's the celeron value package with windows OS) will I be able to login to the acutal desktop of the computer and install things etc.? I want to be able to rent a dedicated server and host gaming servers on it.
Thanks.
CArmstrong 06-15-2004, 12:47 AM Yes. 99.999% of the time you'll get either Administrator or root access to the machine, depending on the operating system. You'd log in via terminal services to a Windows machine, and it'd be just like you were sitting at the terminal. For *nix machines you'll connect via SSH and login as root.
Either way it's like you're sitting right at the machine. The only time you wouldn't get full administrator access is if you bought a fully managed dedicated server and the company preferred they do it?
eddy2099 06-15-2004, 12:51 AM Yes if you have Windows XP, you should have Remote Desktop Connection which you can use to do that very thing. Just make sure that you check with them about the version of Windows server you be using to see if you can legally install game servers on it. The Windows 2003 Web Edition might not permit you to do so legally while the Standard Edition has no problem with it legally.
CArmstrong 06-15-2004, 12:52 AM Good point eddy: the licensing for Web edition prohibits many applications.
TechSolution 06-15-2004, 01:14 AM Web Edition only prohibits various pieces of Microsoft software (like MS SQL). Game servers are fine.

This is good news.. thank you, and thanks to the others that replied so fast.
Would any of you know how much bandwidth a game server uses or where I could find out that information?
Thanks,
Derek
DD-SNC 06-15-2004, 03:50 AM Depends on the game, amount of users and how long they are connetedand active. I'd go for big, multihomed bandwidth providers such as ev1 cuz their so cheap. =\
planning on halo servers and maybe some counter strike servers....any experience anyone with how much bandwidth that uses? 16 player halo server... i am more interested in the details for that.
Thanks.
TechSolution 06-15-2004, 11:03 AM EV1 doesn't have a good network for game servers. I'd recommend ThePlanet/ServerMatrix.
Joshua 06-15-2004, 11:44 AM I think it would be quite foolish to put game servers on a Celeron 1.3 GHz, especially if you're looking at running multiple games.

Xenos 06-15-2004, 12:32 PM It would be wise to take TechSolution's and Joshua's advice or you will be very unhappy ;)
DD-SNC 06-16-2004, 03:18 AM Guess I'm beat and that proves that because you're the cheapest, you're not always the best..
TechSolution 06-16-2004, 01:38 PM ServerMatrix is cheaper than EV1 for game servers anyways.
You can't run games on Celerons.
i.e. EV1: P4 2.4Ghz, 1GB ram, dual 80 GBs hard drives, Window Standard Edition, $1 setup, $204/month. (you can save $15/month with Web Edition, but I'm trying to keep the comparison as similar as possible)
ServerMatrix: same setup, $299 setup, $139/month
SM: same setup, $199 setup, $159/month
SM: same setup, $99 setup, $179/month
SM: same setup, $49 setup, $199/month
So, if you don't mind paying a bit of setup, SM is much cheaper.

Yes you can, though very slow, and laggy, Celerons work fine for one or two servers, with a "few" players, but it is worth finding an extra few $$ to get a p4 or Athlon

TechSolution 06-16-2004, 02:36 PM One server, with a few players, not much more (such as a Halo server in addition to a couple Counter-Strike servers).

a couple?
I only run ONE cs server, 18 players, and as soon as 3 players are connected, my cpu goes BOOM... > 95% :bawling:
might be my site though
HiVelocity 06-16-2004, 09:34 PM You will have full root/admin access to your dedicated server. You should be able to install anything you want via terminal services on your windows box. Basically, login via remote desktop with your ip and you will be looking at your server desktop.
TechSolution 06-17-2004, 12:12 AM I'm saying you could only run one server maximum, not several servers, like what the author of the topic was interested in.
