As the title under my name says i'm a complete newbie at this so all suggestions/advice will be welcome.

What i would like to do is put up a forum where the members could talk and post links to anything the like. There would be no downloads except members pics and maybe later members own graphic designs (though there may be links to offsite adult images).

What amount of storage and bandwidth and which host do you suggest.

It all depends if its a hit or not ;). You could probably just start out with like 100 mb 5 gb of bandwidth and mysql databases with php and upgrade as you get larger.

As RewDog said; you don't need to go overboard with size of site.
It takes a long time (generally) to generate a lot of forum traffic.
However, I would add that, if you intend to supply links to adult content, you will need to find a host that allows adult content. Because most hosts that prohibit adult content, generally, also prohibit "links" to adult content.
