View Full Version : How do I tell godaddy to [stop]?
nybble 06-13-2004, 06:29 PM So the topic is a bit extreme... but it's what I want to do.
Every few days / hour I get stupid emails from godaddy offering hosting services, services, domains and just about everything under the sun! SSL certs, cars, dogs.. ok, so I made the last 2 up, sue me.
Anyway, I am just sick of this! I did not tell godaddy to email me, nor any of the owners of the domains.... how do I tell them to stop? Do they feel like spam helps? I swear.... I get an email just about every week with offers from them, hosting & what not.
Is there some dumb option that I can un-select? It seems pretty dumb of them... I mean, they are the "#1 Registrar" yet they spam their own PAYING customers.
I don't sell godaddy domains to customers... and I never will. It's just every email address they get their hands on gets some spam it seems. I wouldn't laugh is their wildwestdomain thing emailed your customers with links to godaddy's hosting services.
xyzulu 06-13-2004, 06:32 PM have you opened a support request with them? I have found them to be very helpful.
And BTW I never get any emails from them, except domain renewals.
Is there an unsubscribe, remove etc.. link at the very bottom of the email? Most companies have one of those... Otherwise, is there a section in your member's area like preferences, profile, etc..? Surf around there...
Sorry I couldn't be more help, I don't use Godaddy (and now I'm glad I don't) :)
nybble 06-13-2004, 06:35 PM Hmm, I will look around.
Here is an example/quote from one email:
HOT opportunity to earn extra cash? Look to GoDaddy.com's sister company, Wild West Domains(R) - the hottest reseller program going!
Heck, my spam software even canned it.
I get the same emails.
There is an unsubscribe link, but it's useless - the mail's keep on coming. The only way I avoid it now, is using Cerberus, just can everything from godaddy.

nybble 06-13-2004, 06:37 PM Ahuh!
"If you do not wish to receive our special offers and notices, please go to:"
YAY! Post closed :D
nybble 06-13-2004, 06:39 PM Oh sure.. and now I see your post :)

Ok, so we can now call godaddy a spammer?

Why not?
I've been calling as I see it, for about 12 month's. I even called them and specifically asked that I was not contacted with any further 'special offers', and gave them each and every email that should be removed.
That was a mistake, as it seemed to just provoke more out of them :(

gina_ 06-13-2004, 06:45 PM If you cant unsubscribe, perhaps you could report it to SpamCop (http://vww.spamcop.com/)?
nybble 06-13-2004, 06:47 PM If I didn't delete it... yeah. Thanks for the idea.
As for godaddy, if your reading; I want you to **** ** **** **** **** *** *******!!!(small joke :P )
Kerry Jones 06-13-2004, 07:34 PM Anyone live in Indiana? Spam goes for $500 per violation. I suggest checking your spam laws in your area. If they have good enough violations such as Indiana take them to the bank for spam.
Xshare 06-13-2004, 07:36 PM I've been a paying user of godaddy for a number of domains for years. I don't get a single one of these spam emails. Not one. You guys must've selected something at registration or something, because I have no issues with them at all. They've been great with me, support was great too.
geesh.net 06-13-2004, 08:26 PM Same here as well, even registered another domain with godaddy last night, and out of all the domains I have at godaddy, none of them generate godaddy spam.
cywkevin 06-13-2004, 08:36 PM Yep I read all the stuff I sign up for. People think its cool to pre-check boxes like send me updates about your products.
bddesign 06-13-2004, 08:37 PM I haven't gotten any emails from godaddy about other products but they do get a little pushy when a domain expires.

Nope.
I always check for any hidden boxes, or anything that says they reserve the right to email me with X promotions, etc.
It also does not explain why the 'unsubscribe' link produces nothing but more spam.
God bless ENOM, they are seemingly becoming the only registrar that respects it's users.

I live in Indiana, but I haven't gotten any GoDaddy spam.. *knocks on wood*
If I do get more than one GoDaddy spam, I might look into that law.
nybble 06-13-2004, 09:10 PM It all depends what you call spam....
I did not ask for offers, I told them to stop... and they still send me un-releated stuff trying to make my buy or sign up for a service.
If this is aganst a law in Nova Scotia, Canada, please let me know ;)
nameslave 06-13-2004, 09:26 PM I had (yes HAD) dozens of registrations with GoDaddy, but don't recall getting 1 single spam e-mail from them. Perhaps you should be REALLY careful in unchecking ALL those pre-checked boxes when signing up.

Strange.
Maybe they are targetting Nova Scotian residents?
I'm in Shelburne, NS.
Unfortunately, it's not against the law here, as Register.com in Yarmouth would be shut down right now, if it was.

Acroplex 06-13-2004, 09:56 PM Block GoDaddy's email address in your email manager.
Gen-T 06-13-2004, 10:40 PM I have domains with them, and never had a problem either. Once every couple months I get an advertisement about "this special" or "that special", but that's it, and that's perfectly acceptable. I'm a customer and they are just informing me of certain sales.

exactly, i have the same situation
might be a teck while registering new domain got you into their spam list :D
Kerry Jones 06-14-2004, 03:55 AM Lets make some proof here. Do you mind showing us the headers to ensure us these spam emails are in fact coming from Godaddy and not a 3rd party affilate with Godaddy?
nybble 06-14-2004, 08:11 AM We could, but thats not the point of my thread.
I tried unchecking their send me updates box :P and I'll see how it goes. Wish me luck :(
BalticSea 06-14-2004, 09:17 PM Somewhere in your GoDaddy Account settings is a check box for
receiving special offers. I guess it's checked.
nybble 06-14-2004, 09:27 PM I guess so..... but I still don't like what type of email godaddy sends me, box checked or not.
It does not say "Send me offers from your mother, sister and their dogs". it says updates (or something like that). Anyway, I unchecked it... will see how it goes.
spamurai 06-15-2004, 08:03 PM I report a lot of spam, and godaddy is the only registrar I've dealt with that shuts down spammers who are registered there. I doubt they would spam poeple with one hand while shutting down spammers on their network with the other.
Email their abuse@ address... godaddy actually has one. :)
nybble 06-15-2004, 08:07 PM Maybe its not spam.... rather just special offers.
xevaxdesign 06-16-2004, 02:26 AM I have purchased a couple of names through GoDaddy and dont get spam from them. I would email support at godaddy and ask them to be removed from any type of mailing list.
Disgruntled 06-16-2004, 05:27 AM If you log onto your Godaddy account, click on Customer Info & More. Then Account Settings. Then Email Preference Information. There should be a question "Would you like to recieve [sic]...
...Special offers from us via Email"
If the answer selected is "Yes", then clicking on "No" might solve the problem.
If "No" was already selected, then this should not be happening. Godaddy is located in Scottsdale, AZ. It is listed with Better Business Bureau bbb.org If contacting Godaddy fails to solve the problem, then maybe a BBB complaint will get their attention.
I'd be interested in how this turns out. I'm strongly considering registering a domain with Godaddy when the one I registered with Yahoo either expires or I can get the Santa Clara County District Attorney to convince Yahoo to allow me to transfer it like I requested. (That tale of woe is posted at topic "How long for a domain transfer?")

I've registered 5 domains with GoDaddy and the only emails I've received so far
are the ones right after the purchase with billing and domain information :)
Disgruntled 06-16-2004, 02:56 PM I'm having some other misgivings about Godaddy.
Description of problem with Yahoo is posted at
http://www.komando.com/reviews_show.asp?showID=7187
While I fault Yahoo for giving no customer support, I did cancel the June 8 order with Godaddy on June 10, 2004. Godaddy wasted no time in taking the money, but I checked my credit card balance and transactions, and Godaddy still has not refunded the money at time of this writing.

Did you register a domain name with GoDaddy?
As far as I know domain name registrations are not refundable.
dmaven 06-16-2004, 09:18 PM As long as they give you an opt out option it should be easy to be removed from their mailings

The attempt to transfer the domain from Yahoo (actually Melbourne IT with Yahoo as reseller) to Godaddy flopped. GoDaddy emailed the passwords to the address in the Whois, and hosting of that address by Yahoo was discontinued. And yet the unhosted registry with Melboune IT continues to prevent me from registering it as a new domain. So I spoke with Yvonne in billing at Godaddy on Thursday Jun 10, and the order is definitely canceled. This is how I manage to have an account log-in with Godaddy, but no actual domain being registered or hosted by them with that account.
My credit card payment info shows the 6/8/04 billing. No refund shows there. So far checking with my credit card company shows an account balance consistent with being charged but not refunded. Status of Pending Domain Transfers shows "Transfer canceled or expired."
I checked with Yvonne earlier this week, and she said it takes 5-7 days for the refund. So Godaddy has until this afternoon to be in compliance enough to avoid complaints to appropriate agencies. I think they've pretty much thrown away the possibility of getting a new order from me after I get the domain name freed from Yahoo/Melbourne IT.
Disgruntled 06-17-2004, 03:35 PM Today was one week from the time that I called Yvonne to cancel the order with Godaddy. My credit card balance still shows that there was no refund. I called Godaddy billing and spoke with Alfredo. He says that this time, 6/17/04, the refund is definitely entered--something Yvonne should have done but didn't. Alfredo says it may still take another 4 days before this shows up in the balance with my credit card company. A check of my Godaddy online account indicates that Alfredo is probably telling the truth. The 6/8/04 billing that was listed there has now disappeared. I'll still have to do a reality check with the credit card company. I don't know what Godaddy was trying to accomplish by wasting the last week not doing the refund on the 6/10/04 order cancellation.
