View Full Version : Host emails us accusing us of hacking his server
CoryPippen 06-13-2004, 05:27 PM Hello,
I just got this email from Matt at Digital Fusion Hosting.
http://www.dbz.digifuse.net is advertising your site -- without the account owners, or the hosts consent. If this false *hosted by cpqservices.com* does not get off the that account within 5 days. Or 5 hours if this is not answered within 2 hours of its submission, we WILL be fining you of a sum of $100.00US - $500.00US. Should the advertisment, hereby known as "the condemned" go unremoved, the fine will be placed. Should the fine go ignored, matters will be taken off the internet and to court, charging a sum of up to $5000.00US. I'll say this one thing, and I'm sure you'll agree. Removing the condemned is the recomended way to go. I'm sorry that our two companies must meet under such circumstances, however these small issues must not go ignored. Please contact me via msn messenger/e-mail if you wish to pause the set date and negotiate the matter.
Thank you, Matt Warren -- Digital Fusion Hosting
It appears that our welcome page is being displayed on his clients website. Apparently, he thinks we put it there, which is completely un-true. How it got there I do not know, but this whole ordeal seems very fishy to me... What do you think?
AH-Tina 06-13-2004, 05:37 PM He's an idiot. He can't "fine" you anything. Tell him to go pound sand. Seriously, tell him exactly the following:
"I have no idea what you're talking about. We don't forcibly put our ads or content on any server. We have no need to.
Feel free to have your attorney contact us at (company snail mail address) if you have further concerns. Any further contact from you, directly, will be considered harrassment and attempted extortion."
Whatever you do, DON'T email him or respond to anything else he has to say via email.

CyberBabe 06-13-2004, 05:40 PM Maybe some hacker is trying to set you up by hacking into a competitors server and putting your name on it. Anyways, if you didn't do it, I don't see how you can be held responsible.

Wow, nicely done.

Why is that?
AH-Tina 06-13-2004, 05:41 PM Because you don't need to and idiots like that don't deserve an argument or debate.
The more you respond to him, the more likely you get pulled down the "Yeah, well I did not." "You did too." "You're stupid, I hate you." "Yeah, well you're stupider." path. ;)
Don't waste your time on him.

CoryPippen 06-13-2004, 05:44 PM Well, we responded to his ticket, and I would really love to talk to this guy. And yes, I found the "fine" part rather funny. It's as if I'm one of his clients under his TOS.
AH-Tina 06-13-2004, 05:47 PM What did you say in the ticket?

MSN: cpqis@hotmail.com AIM: CPQIS Cory. This is an odd occurence which we had nothing to do with. The address you gave me points to a page that is automatically generated upon creation of an account, I have no idea why it is on your site. I would like to talk with you via the above ways to sort this out. Please do not throw accusations at us. Let's go about this in a responsible manner.
Look what he put for his information on the ticket:

Mark_TVI 06-13-2004, 05:51 PM I love the hereby "condemned" bit...:D
AH-Tina 06-13-2004, 05:51 PM Let us know how it turns out. Personally, he sounds like a 16 year old kid throwing a temper tantrum...and I wouldn't waste my time.
SLH-Ken 06-13-2004, 06:21 PM Yah, dont even bother wasting time, this kid has nothing on you and you have nothing to worry about.
CoryPippen 06-13-2004, 09:43 PM Well, I just got done chatting with Matt. Apparently, someone uploaded an encrypted file wich was the cause of the problem, most likely the customer himself. I just don't see why he would want to do that...
boonchuan 06-13-2004, 09:55 PM I think it is a misunderstanding, maybe some wrong setting on the IIS or httpd.conf. Just explain nicely to him. One more friend is better than one more enemy anytime of the day.

Don't you just love it when people jump the gun? They should've been investigating the matter in a more professional way and should have sent you an e-mail to let you know about the incident that occured and not wrongfully accuse you the way that they did.
Amish_Geek 06-13-2004, 11:43 PM I would have found it funnier if it was a customer from Digital:Fusion Hosting who uploaded the page, and then contacted you pretending to be Digital:Fusion Hosting trying to weasel you into paying them the "Fine".

Not everyone who talks like that is a kid! when frustration comes over even a normal person would act crazy! :)
So the best way is to communicate appropriately that this was not done by your hosting company and you will help to get to the bottom of this matter as your reputation is on the line :)
coight 06-14-2004, 12:50 AM Sounds like some sort of kid that isn't making enough in hosting . New way for these kids to make money?

Well, I spoke with him on MSN and I really don't think he is a kid. I think this was an honest mistake and he just jumped the gun. I would have been upset too.
We talked about the issue and worked everything out, I let him know very clearly and politely that this had nothing to do with us. He understood and apologized for the accusations.
Aussie Bob 06-14-2004, 01:34 AM All's well that ends well. :)
Good to see things resolved in a more mature manner than most places nowadays. People really should hault with the sudden jumping to conclusions no matter how much something aggrevates you. Always get all the facts straight before throwing around meaningless comments/remarks/threats.
Rodzilla 06-14-2004, 03:48 AM THE CONDEMNED! Dun dun dun!
[inx]Olly 06-14-2004, 04:03 PM So everything's fine now? :D

Everything is fine :)
zynet 06-15-2004, 09:01 PM Not to mention if some hacker really did do this to you they
could be sniffing packets intercept the replies you make and change the content in the email.
Just a thought

Jay Suds 06-16-2004, 02:17 AM .. THE CONDEMNED .. LOL :) That's a funny one. I personally wouldn't have even taken the time to respond to this guy. Legally, his email has no standing ...
Yaser 06-16-2004, 04:33 AM Why not reply? and get the facts cleared like it was done above, instead of letting others have wrong impression about your company. Personally i would talk to someone for hours/days whatever it maybe if my company's reputation was on the line for some misunderstanding. It takes years to build good reputation and a few minutes to destroy it, though this is not directly related to this case.
Thanks, Yaser.
pergesu 06-16-2004, 05:44 AM After that "How much do you make per server" thread, I think I've joined the Tina fan club.
Tina, I think your recommended response was excellent. Many people have mentioned that hosts shouldn't jump the gun and make rash accusations like this person did. I'm interested in how you (or anyone else) would handle the situation if it were reversed. You visit you web site, and are greeted by one of your competitors' pages. I imagine the first thing to do would be to take it down, but then what course of action would you take?
Reality Hosting 06-16-2004, 08:28 AM You know what happens when you assume something :)
maxdf 06-16-2004, 10:01 AM to assume makes an [I think you can figure it out] out of U and ME

I'd have one of our admins check the logs to find out when it got there. If it were an isolated incident, I'd probably make a mental note of it but do nothing. If it happened repeatedly, I'd put our Senior Admin on the task of finding out what the hell was going on. If we then find out it was something fishy, I'd probably send the company an email that was friendly, yet inquiring.
I guess I'd be more concerned about how someone was able to gain access and work on locking down the server.

markjut 06-16-2004, 04:41 PM LOL he has no right to fine you at all - probably a kid trying to get a few more dollars
