I don't usually trash talk on forums, actually, I never do, though I have been mildly critical of EV1 recently -- at least among my colleagues. However, I am a fair man, and thus, I must relate good news about EV1 too, when it happens.

A few days ago, one of my CPanel ded servers was compromised. EV1 took my server offline because the server was port scanning other PCs (No, don't know how they broke in at this time. Yes, I had a firewall, latest updates, tmp secured, compilers off, latest kernel, etc., etc., etc.). I initially got pissed because they didn't give me a lot of info in the ticket and they just turned the server off. And then, when I called, I got a low level support rep who was there only to tell me that they were working on the problem. Okay, that's fine. "Wait for the tech to reply to your ticket", they told me. Okay.. fine. Let's just see how long it takes them, I thought to myself.

Well, honestly, it did not take EV1 support long at all to get working on the solution. They updated my ticket almost immediately after my call and told me what they found in regard to the compromise. They then told me that they could rebuild the server with a new OS and new install of CPanel and place my old master drive as a slave so I could restore the server. Fine, I said. I purchased the 2 hour guaranteed restore for $69.99 (+ tax?!? -- They also offered a $29 rebuild package with a guarantee of 2-24 hours. That was too long for me to chance.) and waited, wondering if they would actually do this within the "promised" 2 hour period.

To my delight, they rebuilt the server and installed the slave drive in just about an hour. I was back online and, thanks to CPanel, was able to restore my customer sites from backups in just a couple of more hours. And, afterward, I used live chat to ask some questions about the slave drive and the new install and the support rep was excellent and knowledgeable. Just what I needed!

So, I am happy that they were responsive in this very stressful instance. I give credit where credit is due.

Thank you EV1.

On A Personal Note About The Hacker/Cracker
If only I could find the hacker (an ongoing fantasy of mine), I would gladly shove the old slave drive up their butt!
