Hi,

How do you all feel about the new dedicated servers from Rackshack that are P3 and Duron based? The configuration is AWESOME. Will they be better than RaQs? Is it worth switching to them?

I'm very new to Linux, so the control panels that rackshack is offering, are they supposed to be easy to use compared to Raqs? I'll only host one site of the server.

Thanks
Abbas

I've not switched and so have not used the new boxes at RS (I have a 4i there) I'm also pretty new to Linux.. I think, from using the demo of Plesk at their site, that the basic admin of setting up sites etc, will be just as easy as on the Cobalt GUI..

Where I think many of us "newbeites" will have problems is things like kernel updates, security updates etc..

As we currently have it from Cobalt... these are spoon fed to us as .pkg files.. no brainer additions in th CP..

If you go to the basic Plesk panel.. you're going to have to compile these updates from source at the command line.

Not a problem if you know how.. I don't, so I'm sticking with the Cobalt platform.. at least for now.

Even I have no idea on how these updates work. Thanks for pointing this out!

I made the mistake when I got my first RaQ (not from RS) about 18 months ago that all I had to do was add sites and walk away...

WRONG!! Not keeping the machine up-to-date, specifically "bind" (runs the nameserver) which, by the way, since I was so ignorant, I did not even know that I did not need running (was not using the box as a nameserver) <taking breath> all of the above got me hacked...

It really is important to watch for the updates. Cobalt is a little behind the curve compaired to doing a compiled in box update from source but... they *usually* work without breaking to awfully much and I suspect that an improperly installed update would mess things up pretty well..

More power would be better but going with a 4i and 512mb of memory should give you more than enough power for what you have in mind..
