I mentioned this search engine http://www.kartoo.com in a different thread but I figured a new thread would be more appropriate. People were complaining about search engines, etc. This site is pretty cool.

CybexHost 06-08-2004, 07:08 PM That is certainly a new way to approach search, let's watch how this company proceeds :) xyte 06-08-2004, 07:53 PM That is actually a pretty cool site! Thanks for the link! Mark Veign 06-08-2004, 09:58 PM Thats was kinda kewl There was another one that viewed the search results in a spidered 3D kinda view that would show as many levels back as you would like to see. Based on the Google search results. Just can't remember the name of the site... ...thinking but coming up blank... I just searched through my notes, and I first came across kartoo in March 2002. From any information I can find now, they haven't increased their piece of the search engine pie -- though they have put into place some significant technical improvements I don't mean that to take away from the value of the site, though. We've been using it for a long time to track down related sites and to identify both potential competitors and potential link partners. It is an impressive achievement, but I don't really see it as the future direction of search engines. If you want to just type in a phrase and find sites that have information about that topic, the fact is that the output of a "traditional" search engine is more likelty to give you what you're looking for. I agree, I just thought it looks cool :) It's not often I come across things that are just interesting to look at and different. Here are a few more that take a similar approach -- clustering search results -- that you might want to look at: http://search.mapstan.net/ http://www.mooter.com http://vivisimo.com/ http://www.touchgraph.com/TGGoogleBrowser.html The first two, like kartoo, present graphical maps. Vivisimo's results aren't graphically displayed. To me, that just makes it easier to use to retrieve real information, though it's not as pretty. Touchgraph isn't exactly the same thing; you start it out with a site url instead of a search query. It uses java, so don't bother with it if you don't want to install a JRE. |
