I am getting a deciated server and I was going to host some of my friends websites on it. The server comes with 40 gig of data transfer a month, and each additional gig is about $2.00. I can buy 1 mb per a sec for $300 a month, would 1 mb a sec be a good deal if I am planning on about 400 gig of data transfer per a month?
400 gig x $2.00 = $800 a month
1 mb per a sec = $300 a month
I am just basically wondering if 1 mb per a sec is good for a web server hosting some sites or if its better to have a set amount of data transfer per a month.
Is my math right on this...
1 mb per a sec = 60 mb per a min
1 mb per a sec = 3.6 gig a hour
1 mb per a sec = 86.4 gig per day
1 mb per a sec = 2592 gig per a month
Thats a megaBIT line.. not megabyte... I think the actual numbers are closer to 300 GB so ~$1 per GB if the line was constantly _fully saturated_, which you DO NOT want to do... not to mention it doesn't fulfill your 400GB requirement.. have you looked at http://www.rackshack.net ? 400GB would cost you ~$250 / month versus whatever you'd be paying at the host you're considering. Just my $.02..

Well I have allready signed a 1 year contract so I need to go with this company. So this is a megaBIT line which is approx 300 GB a month? Well thats much cheaper then if I bought 300 GB of data transfer at $2 a GB a month.
Is this 1 megaBIT line just like a T1? Thats what the guy told me.

I dont' know much about your bandwidth issue, but you might
want to take a second look at rackshack because they
are in Texas and you have to pay them 8.25 percent sales tax on
the server which makes it $105 something a month. Also I think
texas requires you to pay the 8.25% sales tax on your income off
of the server.
Just some information I hope it helps.

well i looked at rackshack and it looked like the only offered unix, I just want a NT Deciated Server, not a Unix. So with 2/3'rds of a T1 what bandwidth can I expect, around 300 GB a month like JDF said?

I say you shouldn't expect to pull more than 200 gig through a 1 meg line. You would get ~320 gigs if you were pulling full bandwidth for the whole time, but that isn't likely to happen.

its not likey to pull that much (320) because the line would start causing problems and being slow? The sales guy told me its kinda like 600 gig of bandwidth, so i take it thats not the truth?
What they are saying is that you have a MAX bandwidth of 320 GB in theory. However, that would require full saturation of your 1 Mb/sec 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. We can assume that this is not going to be the case due to technical and practicality reasons. So, your monthly bandwith will be somewhere less than 320Mb a month.
EDIT:
It's exactly like Chris said above. You will have what is equal to 2/3 of a T1. Whatever you can make the server push out.
