Hi guys. how do I work out how much bandwidth I can offer my customers. I have a 256k leased line but am unsure how to convert this to the question "how many gigs bandwidth per month can I have?????????"

Hi!
My first advice is not to offer hosting on a 256K line. It's tooo slow. I would suggesting leasing or colocating a server with some server farm.

Next. 256K is the speed of connectivity that you are offering. The other is the mothly datatransfer that you would allow. The monthly data transfer is the total datatransfer from an account i.e. www+ftp+mail+dns .........

I hope that helps.

Have a great day :)

Hi Bob thanks for that. I already host 140 websites on my IIS box and my bandwidth utilization is averaging 30-40 per month so most of our site are obviously low bandwidth users. Its just that we wouldnt mind using up some of the rest of the bandwdith. We have no problem with upgrading when the time is right but as we have no speed complaints at the moment we would be throwing money in the bin.

Mainly the question is because this seems to be the buzzword nowadays, "tell me how much bandwidth I get".

The datatransfer that you can have in a month is 256kbpsX30x24x60x60 = 79G . This would vary at about +or - 30%. Also there may be restrictions by your provider.

However, an honest opinion is that you must upgrade to a faster box. This would really help you get more clients very fast. I would never call a high speed line a waste of investment. I assure you that you would really benifit from it..... Anyway, it is just a personal opinion.....:)

Have a great day :)
