clasione 06-08-2004, 01:38 AM I found a really good site for learning php...
It's free!
I have learned a great deal so far...... I love it....
Figure alot of you should find it ver helpful if your starting to learn...
www.scriptschool.com
;)
Definetly warrents a "thanl you for making this website" email....
Maybe one day I'll have time... :D
Burhan 06-08-2004, 02:44 AM You should have posted this in the Programming Resources sticky :) Maybe a mod will move it there for you.
HeadBuilder 06-08-2004, 03:00 AM I'm so confused; the words are messed up, how do I start to find anything useful??
DosEvil 06-08-2004, 04:02 AM Where can I access the student-only areas at Script School?
What the hell? Gotta love the ad I just saw in the banner rotator bang smack in the middle of their page. I doubt anyone here wants to join an "adult" webmaster affiliate program. The images contained on the banner made me leave straight away.
"Script School is pleased to announce the launch of a free training courses on scripting: a 5 week course on mySQL Basics for Webmasters which is being offered in association with http://www.pornresource.com/"
Yep, all schools should be sponsored by porn sites. It's the way of the future!
clasione 06-08-2004, 08:04 AM Yea - I was surprized when I saw that banner too.... weird - but I guess he's gotta make money some how....
The cources are great though.... I've learned alot.....
crucialx 06-08-2004, 08:35 AM Banner kinda puts me off the site altogether, if they want to make money I'm sure they can put other banner ads there.
TDavid 06-08-2004, 01:00 PM Hello everyone, my name is TDavid, I am the webmaster and owner of Script School. I saw link here in my referer logs and thought I'd come and say hello and answer any questions folks might have about the site.
Some quick history and basic info: the site has been in existence since first quarter of 2000, has a supporting weekly radio show (Fridays 2pm PST / 5pm EST) and currently has thousands of enrolled students.
The simple answer why there is adult advertising is because the site is targeted for and offered in conjunction with adult webmaster resource sites.
I realize the entrance page and overall site design are kludgy and not that good, but I'll take the blame for that. I'm a programmer by trade and clearly not a very good designer. However, I would argue that the programming course material itself is some of the best you'll find on the web and certainly so when you consider the price (FREE). We are in the process of a major site redesign and we do have a full privacy statement and disclosure about the site practices. We do not hide or deceive the facts. If anybody thinks otherwise, then please address this so that we can respond appropriately.
Also, there is currently no adult surfer advertising and no porn content on the website. Additionally, not all of our sponsors are adult companies and we do screen the ads for anything too graphic. You probably have seen much, much worse on late night cable than you have ever seen or likely will ever see on/at Script School.
Furthermore, the ads are not even on every page or in every course lesson or text, there are zero popups and/or other advertising deceptive tactics used, the email lists are safe and have not been shared with anyone for any price -- including sponsors -- and the actual course material (all of which I've either written myself or been involved with) rarely has anything to do with porn.
All in all, I'd say this is about as unobtrusive as it can be and yet still attract adult webmaster sponsors [again, they are the target market] ;)
However, I do realize that there are younger webmasters and also mainstream webmasters that could be morally offended by the concept of an instructional site for adult webmasters. And I've wanted to do something about this for a number of years, actually.
My teenage son is one that fits into this category and I would like to have a place for him, so ... I am actually working with him on an entirely different and new website that will be launching this summer that will be appropriate for him and others fitting this category and will contain teenage-friendly versions of our Script School courses plus new courses which are equally if not more involved and step-by-step. This website will focus only on mainstream webmasters, just like Script School focuses primarily on adult webmasters. The new site will not have a "school" motiff.
At that time (or sooner) the home page of Script School will change into a quasi-warning/entrance page and make it so that visitors who would rather be at the mainstream site can more easily go there before seeing any banners or text that is adult in nature. Believe me, adult sponsors do *NOT* want webmasters who aren't adult webmasters so this will be a win-win situation for everybody involved.
Now here's the catch:
We currently do not have any sponsors for this upcoming mainstream venture, so our choices for financing this site thus far are limited to either charging some sort of fee for full access, soliciting mainstream sponsors, donations and/or using ad brokers like Google. I'm in the camp that thinks the banner model is pretty much a dead horse, though, unless it is highly targeted like Google is doing.
I've had non adult webmasters complain to me about the sponsorship and advertising affiliation at SS before and my response has always been: show me the money and/or volunteer to help out to build a site that is targeted to mainstream webmasters. Unfortunately, somewhere over the course of 4+ years this has just never happened. Sure, people know how to complain, but few people in my experience are willing to volunteer their time/resources to take action. I've spent my available free time and most the resources generated from SS to continue to add new and build upon existing content over the years and to help finance the weekly radio show.
So recently when my son showed an interest in becoming a webmaster I thought this would be a great time for me to 1) help him learn about the business of becoming a webmaster and 2) finally build a site like Script School but instead targeted to mainstream and younger webmasters specifically.
If anybody reading here is interested in possibly being a sponsor for this upcoming mainstream site then you may private message me through this board or contact me at our office. Please, only serious inquiries and mods, sorry if this seems spammy on my first post (I can't leave a link until 5 posts are made, so you'll just have to visit my profile and run me down that way). FYI, I didn't come here and make this long post to spam but rather to explain what's really going on at SS, answer any questions folks might have about the site, and to let folks know that a mainstream alternative will be available this summer. I have bookmarked this thread as well.
clasione - glad you liked the site and thank you for the kind words. No email necessary as this post was kind enough, but certainly appreciated ;)

Wrong Forum.. This is not the right forum for advertising websites.
As fyrestrtr, the orginal post is in the wrong place too.

Excellent, thank you :) I have already shot you email. It will be coming from my tdscripts.com addy in case you need to adjust your filters.
DosEvil - after you do the whole double opt-in thing (you must validate your email) then you can post on the boards and read the past newsletters at scriptschool.com/news/ -- your login info will be required for both. The courses are in open area and do not require student enrollment. It was done that way intentionally so that folks could see what they were getting and only if they wanted more interaction (just like this board does) then the need to enroll. Occasionally we send a student newsletter but it is even less frequent than weekly and it actually contains some good, useful info about the site as opposed to most newsletters that are just spam. There is not an opt-out of this newsletter, it is part of the student enrollment so if you do not want to get this informative newsletter periodically then please do not enroll. When people ask to be removed, we actually do delete them, BTW, we do not keep them around or add to new lists and/or use for other things like some sites do. I hate it when sites do that kind of stuff.
HeadBuilder - class.scriptschool.com contains links to some of the courses and scriptschool.com/php has all the PHP-related courses. Sorry, I can't link anything yet but you can cut and paste.
Did I miss any questions or comments? Feel free to ask away and I'll respond in due course. Might take me a little while, but I will respond if I see any questions.
TDavid 06-08-2004, 03:03 PM azizny - nice to meet you, too :) I wrote my last comments before reading or seeing yours, BTW.

Sorry, but I was not trying to "advertise" our website. I came here as I said because this site is showing up in my referer logs, not because I just decided today would be a good day to drop in on this forum and spam one of our websites. I don't know clasione and if you are insinuating that I do then you are really far off the mark. I don't visit every board or even most boards that link up our websites, so please cut me at least a little slack here. I've been on the web since the 90's. Do some Googling on my name if you really want to verify that.
There are many (hundreads) of sites that offer free tutorials, and many more things.
Agreed. Some of them we've done (like php-scripts.com for example) and the numerous free scripts and programs I've donated to the web over the years are a further example that I believe in giving back to the web community as a whole.
Do something good (at least once) in your life.
I've given no false illusions that SS is a business, not a charitable organization, but my post was not intended to promote SS but to mention an alternative for younger webmasters and mainstream to those who are complaining about the adult stuff here. Please, late night cable is more offensive.
Another advertising issue that is in the wrong forum..
Sorry. Again to the mods (are you one of them, or just a member?): please move this to the appropriate forum if you feel like doing so. I thought by addressing the issue which I thought was "why is the adult stuff there?" I was staying on topic here in this forum and clearing up any potential misunderstandings.
Happy coding to you! :)
clasione 06-08-2004, 08:14 PM Well - definetly glad to see something possitive could come out of this post.... I really do enjoy the classes and have seen a few around, but none were as simple to keep my attention since I am just learning from scratch....
Excellent job -
Finding something free and useful as your site is hard to come by these days....
Hats off to ScriptSchool.com! ;)
DosEvil 06-08-2004, 10:04 PM TDavid, Thank you for answering my questions. I was a bit confused on the whole login thing.
I don't have a problem with the type of advertisement the sites uses, hes got to pay his bills some how.
sapper 06-09-2004, 02:27 PM thanks man this is a great website
