How do I recover root password if I forgot it?

This is a tough one if the machine is on a remote location.
However if the physical access to the box. You must reboot the computer and on the lilo prompt write
linux single.
This would take the box on single mode no password or username is asked then. You can change the password from there and go to the 3 runlevel.

I'm assuming that you are using linux here.
