View Full Version : Mac-friendly reseller hosts?
AppleCider 10-29-2000, 02:12 PM Hi! I've been lurking on these boards for a couple of weeks now, and am very impressed by all the information here.
I'm researching starting a reseller business...it's time. But I'm looking for a host that's at least friendly to us Mac people. It need not run Mac servers; in fact, I think Unix/Linux is the way to go. But the hosts sites I've seen assume you're running either Windows (mostly) or Linux. And no, I'll never give up my Mac <g>
Anyone have any recommendations, particularly Mac people who are happy with their host? Thanks in advance!
kunal 10-29-2000, 02:39 PM What difference would it make? As in, serving web pages wouldnt be done in a different way would it?
It would be the website designers problem to make it compatible, not the host?
Chicken 10-29-2000, 02:44 PM I admit I'm a bit lost as to exactly what you mean. Do you mean support info geared towards Macs? Like no, "Just start up WS_FTP"... ???
rayray 10-30-2000, 02:28 AM It doesnt matter you are using what kind of OS. The only thing u need to know is know how to connect to the internet and how to upload your HTML file to your hosting company via FTP.
GordonH 10-30-2000, 08:07 AM Most web hosts operate their clients accounts through a web based control panel so as long as you have a browser you can run the account.
Most hosts provide FTP instructions for popular MAC and PC FTP programs so there really should be no problem at all.

I use a Dual G4 500 PowerPC as my personal computer and I am loving it. If you have any questions about setup or configurations for your MAC I can help you out no matter what provider you choose.
AppleCider 10-30-2000, 04:44 PM Thanks, ODE! Much appreciated, and I'll be looking at your site :)
What I meant was: hosting sites that claim that Mac users cannot use Telnet, let alone SSH. Or mySQL. Or Pearl. Sheesh! I just don't want to be told "you're on a Mac; you can't have those features." I guess I meant not "Mac hostile."

Or perl even :) Seriously, you can do anything on a Mac re: webhosting than you can do on a PC. Just different programs, but in the end, it all gets done.
ODE, Nice Machine!!! :) I had to say goodbye to a Dual 450/1GB at school.
Chicken, I think a lot of it has to do with the ignorance of the person at the web hosting company. Some won't take the time to figure out the equivilence for the MAC
Thanks John. Wow 1GB, I've only got 512MB RAM. I was pretty lucky when I ordered my MAC. I actually ordered a single G4 500 right before they introduced the new product line, they canceled my order and upgraded it to a Dual G4 500 and added another 10GB of hard drive space at no extra charge.
We're 98% Mac in our office. No real difference, just different software to FTP, design and such, otherwise you can do everything a PC can do, just better!
And YES, there is telnet software. We have everything PC's have.
Chicken 10-31-2000, 04:24 PM LOL @ Rob!
PhUnB0i 11-01-2000, 05:50 PM We're actually moving to be a 100% mac based host by the end of the year... mostly due to security and reliability. And it is true, you can do anything on a mac that can be done on a PC =)
I think people that we currently have on Linux systems won't even know the difference.
