View Full Version : DNS / NS What?

For the longest time I thought NS was simply name server; as in domain name server. However, after reviewing for MCSE exams I found it isn't (at lease by MS).

My reasoning:

Windows 2000 Server DHCP; you give IP address, default gateway, and DNS server. This method works fine. However if you do not specify DNS server, but specify NS it does not work.

So my question is what is the difference and why; if there is a difference (stupid MS developers:)!)

Thanks!

There is no difference.
DHCP - dynamic host configuration protocol us used for assing an IP dynamically for a box.
It must have DNS running to get the name for the IP.... That's it...

I guess that helps...

Have a great day :)

That's what I though. But if you play with DHCP, you'll notice in your record types you have DNS Server & NS Server. I guess MS uses it 2 ways...

Oh well... MS just making things hard for their users again...:)

Thanks!

NS is to specify servers for Netbios name resolution. Windows networking if you may.
