Hi

My partner and I are planning on building a monster server, and colocating it somewhere, with top of the line hardware. Basically what i need to know is, is it a good idea for us to just buy a regular ATX tower case, and go from there, or do places not colocate those anymore?

I heard *something* about hosts either charging alot for towers, or not accepting them *anymore* ??

Can someone please fill me in

How would i go about building a rack server?

I mean is it the same type of deal, go buy the actual CASE? and put everything in there

thanks

tower's usally take up 3u. where a rackmountable can take up 1u. But if it is going to be a monster server it may take up more then 1 u anyway. what do you have in mind?

Why not just build it in a 4U case?

Hosts should still take towers, if the price is right. Towers have better heat dispersion (word??) and are less expensive to build.

There are datacenters that have open racks rooms available specificially for non rack mountable. What are the dementions of the box?

A lot of hosts I know will accept non rackmountable cases. They might charge you some extra for a shelf to put it on, but it is not that big of a deal. Just check with your hosts to see what their policy is.

Clocker,

you can get a tower slot on an open rack for aprox $250. + BW.

For what it is worth, I have seen prices MUCH lower than this.
